It is a matter of common observation by the classroom teacher that accompanying the rapid expansion of the high school during the past decade or two, the character of the high school population has been undergoing remarkable changes. Ability grouping for eighth-grade Algebra I is not a new idea.1 It has been tried many times.2 During the school years 1960-61 and 1961-62 a program of this nature was carried out at Delray Junior High School, Delray Beach, Florida.
