This chapter (1) expounds Locke’s empiricist principle that all of our ideas are derived from experience, and (2) offers a clarification of the structure of Book II of the Essay. Regarding (1), it explains his twofold use of the term “idea” to mean both any sensory or introspectible state and any concept, his distinctions between ideas of sensation and ideas of reflection and between simple and complex ideas, and his classification of simple ideas. It identifies some noteworthy points about the idea of solidity. Regarding (2), it provides a clarification of the organization of Book II, in light of the facts that Locke (a) digresses into the theory of primary qualities and secondary qualities in Book II Chapter viii before continuing his aetiology of ideas, and (b) discusses several complex ideas of reflection, in Book II Chapters x and xi, before officially turning to complex ideas in Chapter xii.

SummaryPhobic avoidance has been widely accepted as the central feature of the agoraphobic syndrome, and the presence of agoraphobia has been used to define groups of subjects for clinical research. A review of the evidence suggests that agoraphobia should not be classified with the phobias; several lines of inquiry point to the conclusion that it is a variable feature of patients suffering from anxiety neurosis. Implications for research and problems with the present classification of neurotic affective disorders are noted.

SYNOPSISThe origins of present misconceptions of pathological intoxication are reviewed, and the main symptoms examined in relation to possible aetiological factors. The diagnosis is infrequently made in clinical practice, and has little use in court in cases of alcohol-related violence. It is suggested that ‘pathological drunkenness’ (lCD 291.4) should be removed from the International Classification of Diseases.

This chapter provides a critical review of GIS-based multicriteria decision analysis (GIS-MCDA) for supporting group (collaborative and participatory) decision making. The review is based on a survey of referred papers that have been published over the last 15 years or so. The chapter offers a classification of the GIS-MCDA approaches for group decision making. First, the articles are classified according to the generic elements of the MCDA methods. Second, the GIS-MCDA methods are classified according to the various perspectives on collaborative decision support. These taxonomies of the GIS-MCDA approaches provide a background for an evaluation of the contribution of MCDA to GIS-based collaborative decision making.
