The purpose of this column is to illustrate how the humanbecoming leading‐following model was lived by nurses practicing within hospital, community, and school settings. The authors describe practice scenarios to show ways that nurses guided by the humanbecoming theory lived the processes and the key ideas of the model. One example addresses a change of policy, as the nurse lived the humanbecoming beliefs and values in leading‐following. This column is nursing theory‐guided evidence‐based practice.

Nursing theory and differing sources of nursing knowledge have focused the argument that nursing theory and nursing practice must be founded on a scientific base. The phrase “evidence based” is increasingly entering the discourse around nursing effectiveness and has captured the attention of managers, because of its seeming potential to rationalize costs in healthcare provision, and researchers, because of its association with problems related to lack of adoption of research findings in nursing. A potential exists to broaden the chasm between the art and the science of nursing, when the art of nursing is gaining credibility. This paper challenges the current of evidence-based practice. It argues that the two concepts, when viewed through the postmodern lens, are not necessarily an oxymoron.

Nursing educators are challenged to include nursing theory in all levels of curricula when faced with many influences and requirements competing for course content, placement, and credit. Some of the essential influences and content, such as quality, safety, evidence-based practice, and research methods are important. However, the critical emphasis on theory and its relationship to practice and research must be preserved. This article addresses the influences that may threaten this relationship at the baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral levels of nursing education. Strategies are offered to ensure nurse educators continue to offer appropriate nursing theory content to advance both nursing science and practice.
