Pollen productivity estimates from old-growth forest strongly differ from those obtained in cultural landscapes: Evidence from the Białowieża National Park, Poland

Old-growth forests arę natural biocoenoses, which developed and function without apparent impacts of human activity, which are adjusted to their habitats and remain in perfect biocoenotic equilibrium. In a forest environment there occurs a high diversity of seminal and cryptogamic plants and fungi, including lichenized fungi (lichens). The disappearance of old-growth forests affected by human activity or their strong fragmentation and isolation are the greatest danger for numerous typically forest lichens. On the basis of selected lichens - indicators of old-growth forests we undertook an attempt at detecting well-preserved lowland areas, which are at present biocentres of typically forest species. The most important features of indicatory species were considered the following: they are native species growing exclusively in forest communities; they are permanent components of forest biocoenoses, while their biological-ecological properties are adjusted to the phytoclimate and biotopes of forest environment; they inhabit specific forest habitats; they are typical epiphytes and epixylites inhabiting old live trees and dead wood of various stages of decomposition; they do not grow in managed forests. A total of 71 species that will serve the function of obligatory indicators (IND) of old-growth forests were selected for Poland's natural lowland forests (see Table 1). 53 of these species are presently strongly threatened, possessing the status of the Red List Categories (CR, EN and VU). The following 10 forest areas were evaluated: Białowieża National Park (58 IND), the reserves of Budzisk (34 IND), and Starożyn (29 IND) in North-Eastern Poland, reserves of Borki (29 IND), Las Warmiński (17 IND) and Krutynia (18 IND) in Northern Poland, and the reserves of Spała (15 IND), Zagożdżon (13 IND), Białe Ługi (10 IND) and Żyznów (4 IND) in Central Poland (Table 2). The highest number of old-growth forests occur in the Białowieża National Park (84%). This value indicates that the Białowieża Ntional Park may now be considered a model comparitive object, the biocentre of epiphytic and epixylic forest species of old-growth forests representing the total ecological amplitude of biodiversity and occupied habitats. In all the 10 biocentres there occur 66 indicatory species of old-growth forests, the highest number of which, ca 88%, occur in the Białowieża National Park, while 51.5% in the Budzisk reserve in the Knyszyńska Forest.

SummaryThe lowland forest on the southern Pacific slope of Costa Rica has an extremely diverse avifauna, including the Black-cheeked Ant-tanager Habia atrimaxillaris. The only known remaining populations of this highly range-restricted species occur in the areas of Piedras Blancas and Corcovado National Park. It is assumed that the population is decreasing due to habitat loss and fragmentation. We assessed the species’ population density in a part of the Piedras Blancas National Park using distance sampling (in February–April 2009 and November 2010–January 2011) and territory mapping (November 2010–January 2011). We also examined habitat preferences based on vegetation structure at point count locations. Black-cheeked Ant-tanagers were exclusively found in old-growth forest. The species’ likelihood of occurrence at census points increased with forest cover (within a radius of 200 m around census points), canopy closure, and density of trees (with diameter at breast height >10 cm). Average population density estimated by distance sampling was 24–27 individuals per km², which is in accordance with the population size estimated by territory mapping (17–25 birds per km²). Based on these estimates, an overall population size of 12,432–20,720 birds is predicted for the remaining 592 km² lowland forest area of the Golfo Dulce region. The Black-cheeked Ant-tanager was only recorded in old-growth forest, but not in gallery forests embedded in a human-dominated landscape matrix. Since the species appears to avoid forest edges, further forest degradation and fragmentation will have a strong negative impact and should be rapidly reduced by adequate conservation measures.

Abstract Diverse structural elements play an important role in sustaining biodiversity in old-growth forests. Therefore, it is important to have thorough knowledge about these habitats and their condition in protected areas. Metsakorralduse Büroo OÜ conducted a large-scale Natura 2000 forest habitat inventory that covered 60% of Lahemaa National Park (LNP) area. Western taiga habitat data (7,191 ha) from this inventory was used for analysis of forest stages. The data was grouped according to stand classes by total area and these classes were compared by deadwood occurrence and relative density. For more precise evaluation of coarse woody debris (CWD) we used 27 sample plots from the Estonian Network of Forest Research Plots (ENFRP) located in LNP. The biggest areas of Western taiga habitat were covered by mature and old stages. CWD occurrence (over 5 m3ha−1 of snags and logs) by habitat representativeness is higher in old and natural forest classes. This logical result is overshadowed by the outcome that the CWD was not substantially present on 32% of the area in the old-growth forest class. This indicates that these areas lack the potential of biological legacies to provide critical niche habitats for different species. The study shows that the CWD quantity in Estonian conditions is similar to that reported in previous studies in this region, but because many of the older forest stage classes do not have any CWD present, these areas should include ecological restoration practices in their conservation planning. By creating snags, logs and gaps in these areas, we are able to create better structural variability and include wood into different decay processes.

<p>As disturbances are predicted to increase both in terms of frequency and severity due to global changes, it is important to improve our knowledge on their natural regimes in order to adopt an appropriate management to enhance the resilience of forest stands. In this context, the assessment of disturbance regimes in old-growth forests is becoming increasingly important because these ecosystems are considered as reference systems that developed without significant human impact for long periods of time. In the temperate zone of Europe only few fragments of mountain forests perhaps succeeded to persist despite millennia-long anthropogenic land-use pressure. However, few studies support their long-term stability and continuity in a changing landscape. Our study focuses on one of the largest and well-preserved old-growth forests in the Balkans. It is situated in the Biogradska Gora National Park reserve, whose extension (c. 6000 ha) is large enough to recognize the natural range of variability of disturbance processes. Under informal protection (hunting reserve) since 1878, the area became National Park in 1952. At present the forest is dominated by beech, silver fir and Norway spruce. We assume that the old-growth forest stands dominated by coniferous trees, which are currently confined to the inner part of the reserve, were more widespread in the past, and that their area was strongly reduced due natural disturbances and land-uses (e.g. grazing activities, fires, forest exploitation) that may have promoted the spread of beech. We used orthorectified high-resolution Pléiades satellite images (0.5-2 m) and field surveys of forest structures and composition to assess the spatial patterns of successional stages of forest development, thereby indirectly tracing the recent disturbance regime. However, such datasets are unable to unfold longer-term trends and to identify the type of disturbances. Moreover, carrying out dendrochronological research both on living and dead biomass is banned in the reserve area. Thus, we reconstructed longer-term changes in species composition, and disturbance and land use histories using pollen, plant-macrofossils, and charcoal analyses from sediments spanning the past 1000 years. Sediments were collected from a small forest hollow situated on the edge of the present old-growth forest reserve. We found that on the edges of the reserve forest cover dominated by conifers (mainly<em> Abies</em>) was reduced due to land-use activities (agriculture, cattle grazing), as suggested by Cerealia-type pollen and <em>Sporormiella</em> spores. The expansion of beech populations, which are dominant around the forest hollow today, occurred very recently. What emerges with the current level of detail achieved in our study is that tree cover and composition changed substantially over time on the edge of the old-growth forest reserve. This suggests that the edges of the reserve were disturbed and consequently not characterized by long-term stability and continuity of vegetation. Expected results will advance awareness of the legacies of past environmental changes and forest-management on current ecosystems. This multidisciplinary study, in a poorly explored area as the Balkans, will permit to anticipate biotic responses of these important mountain ecosystems in front of future environmental changes, providing useful information for their management and conservation.</p>
