Nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NA-AION) is a multifactorial disease that represents the most common type of ischemic optic neuropathy. NA-AION develops in one eye and can occur in the fellow eye at a later date.1The recurrence of ipsilateral NA-AION is rare and a multitude of theories have arisen to explain this infrequent recurrence.2 This case report describes an incident of unilateral recurrence of NA-AION, explores the proposed etiologies, and will emphasize visual symptoms following its resolution.   Key words.  optic nerve edema  Ÿ  recurrent Ÿ nonarteritic ischemic optic neuropathy Ÿ contrast sensitivity  Ÿ  peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL)

A 34-year-old male presented to the emergency department with a penetrating injury of the left globe and orbit from a Thomas A Swift’s Electric Rifle (TASER®) probe. The severity of the globe injury precluded primary closure of the globe; a primary evisceration was performed. In this article, we discuss not only the case in detail but also the TASER® rifle and the literature to support our decision in performing an evisceration rather than an enucleation, which historically has been taught to decrease the risk of sympathetic ophthalmia (SO) in the fellow eye. We are of the opinion, after reviewing the literature, that SO is not an overwhelming reason to choose enucleation over evisceration and that evisceration has an advantage over enucleation with regard to functional and cosmetic outcomes.

Unilateral retinitis pigmentosa (URP) is a rare tapetoretinal dystrophy affecting only one eye. Criteria are necessary to make a correct diagnosis of URP: exclude all infective etiologies, check that the clinical signs of retinitis are present in the affected eye and the total absence of any signs or symptoms of retinitis pigmentosa in the fellow eye. Electroretinogram (ERG) and electro-oculogram (EOG) are useful for the correct diagnosis. In this paper we report one case.
