People's health beliefs strongly influence their health and illness behaviour. Such beliefs influence whether people treat themselves or consult family, friends or medical services. Further, the timeous and appropriate seeking of help is extremely important in order to improve the health status of any community. This is especially true in the South African context. In this article the health and illness beliefs of urban blacks ( N = 892) were examined and a model of help-seeking behaviour is postulated.
