AbstractFatigue modifies the kinematics of various sports-related movements. Basketball induces fatigue, however, the effects of fatigue on the kinematics of shooting have never been studied. This study analysed the effects of fatigue induced by repeated sprints on the kinematics of 3-point shooting (3PS) in young, elite basketball players (U18 level). 3D joint angles were calculated at the maximum and minimum heights of the centre of mass during 3PS, using inertial measurement units (Biomech system, Xsens Technologies BV, Enschede, The Netherlands). Height, velocity and the angle of the ball at the time of release were extrapolated from the wrist joint angles. All players performed four 3PS actions in dynamic conditions before and after a fatigue protocol at 70% of their maximal exercise capacity. The fatigue protocol consisted of a shuttle test with repeated 20-m sprints interspersed with sets of 5 jumps. There was no change in the kinematics of 3PS (p > 0.05), or the ball release variables (p > 0.05) following the fatigue protocol. This suggests that elite basketball players are able to cope with physical fatigue while performing coordinated movements such as 3PS.

Background: The present study analyzes the associations between the muscle contractile properties (MCP) measured at different neuromuscular electrical stimulation amplitudes (NMESa) and the performance or transient fatigue after a bout of repeated sprints. Methods: Seventeen physically active male subjects performed six repeated sprints of 30 m with 30 s of passive recovery. Capillary blood creatine kinase (CK) concentration, knee extension or flexion isometric peak torque, tensiomyography, and repeated sprint performance were assessed. Results: Muscle displacement and contraction time were different in relation to the NMESa used in the rectus femoris and biceps femoris muscles. At rest, significant (p < 0.05) associations were found between muscle displacement and the loss of time in the repeated sprints (sprint performance) at 20 or 40 mA in the rectus femoris. At post +24 h or +48 h, the highest significant associations were found between the muscle displacement or the contraction time and CK or peak torques also at submaximal amplitudes (20 mA). The NMESa which elicits the peak muscle displacement showed lack of practical significance. Conclusion: Although MCP are typically assessed in tensiomyography using the NMESa that elicit peak muscle displacement, a submaximal NMESa may have a higher potential practical application to assess neuromuscular fatigue in response to repeated sprints.

Existing procedures for the simulation of soccer match play fail to incorporate multidirectional and repeated-sprint activities, even though these movements are considered fundamental to match play. In the current study, selected physiological and performance responses were assessed during an adapted version of an existing soccer simulation protocol. Mean heart rates of 163 ± 14 beats·min–1, mean blood lactates of 4.9 ± 2.3 mmol·L-1 and decrements in single-sprint and repeated-sprint performances were observed. The presented adaptations to an existing soccer simulation protocol better reflect the movement characteristics as well as the physiological and performance responses of soccer match play.

Physiol. 82(6): 1897–1904, 1997.—We tested the hypothesis that prolonged exposure to high altitude would impair the restoration of muscle power during repeated sprints. Seven subjects performed two 20-s Wingate tests (WT1 and WT2) separated by 5 min of recovery, at sea level (N) and after 5–6 days at 4,350 m (H). Mean power output (MPO) and O2 deficit were measured during WT. O2 uptake (V˙o 2) and ventilation (V˙e) were measured continuously. Blood velocity in the femoral artery (FBV) was recorded by Doppler ultrasound during recovery. Arterialized blood pH and concentrations of bicarbonate ([[Formula: see text]]), venous plasma lactate ([La−]), norepinephrine ([NE]), and epinephrine ([Epi]) were measured before and after WT1 and WT2. MPO decreased between WT1 and WT2 by 6.9% in N ( P < 0.05) and by 10.7% in H ( P < 0.01). H did not further decrease MPO. O2 deficit decreased between WT1 and WT2 in H only ( P < 0.01). PeakV˙o 2 after WT was reduced by 30–40% in H ( P < 0.01), but excess postexercise O2 consumption was not significantly lowered in H. During recovery in H compared with N, V˙e, exercise-induced acidosis, and [NE] were higher, [Epi] tended to be higher, [La−] was not altered, and [[Formula: see text]] and FBV were lower. The similar [La−] accumulation was associated with a higher exercise-induced acidosis and a larger increase in [NE] in H. We concluded from this study that prolonged exposure to high altitude did not significantly impair the restoration of muscle power during repeated sprints, despite a limitation of aerobic processes during early recovery.
