Abstract With the spatial culture theory as the basis and from the perspective of cultural heritage, this paper elucidates the construction of the Liu Xiao Ling Tong Book Pavilion of Yunnan Normal University (which may also be interpreted as a Traditional Culture Commons), introduces modern library concepts such as ‘celebrity charm’, featured resources and space reconstruction, as well as provides enlightenment to the library cycle with Chinese wisdom and experience. This paper applies participant observation method, interviewing method and textual analysis method with the data collection period from September 2015 to December 2016. Through library space reconstruction and the inheritance of certain outstanding features of Chinese culture, the Liu Xiao Ling Tong Book Pavilion has had an influence among university faculty and students, the university library circle in China and even the entire education circle, while also complemented and improved the applicability of the spatial culture theory in the library circumstance.

International forums for doctoral students offer a fertile context for developing strategic partnerships between higher education institutions, as well as for building the intercultural capacity of early career academics. However, there is limited research investigating the benefits of international doctoral forum partnerships. This paper presents learnings from a recent international doctoral forum held in Beijing, China and attended by doctoral students and academics from Beijing Normal University (China) and Queensland University of Technology (Australia). Drawing on qualitative case study method and a model of boundary crossing mechanisms, we identify the beneficial outcomes of the forum. We describe how the forum arose from a strong ongoing partnership between the Education Faculties of Beijing Normal University and Queensland University of Technology. We then identify how, at the institutional and individual level, international doctoral forum participants can be challenged and benefit in four areas: collaboration, intercultural capacity, academic enhancement and program development. Implications for engaging successfully in international doctoral forum partnerships are also discussed.

In present China, bilingual teaching, as an education model, can meet an urgent demand for increasing interdisciplinary talents who have high levels of professional knowledge as well as competent foreign language abilities to deal with the ever-increasing global social, economic, scientific and technological exchanges, and international cooperation. Bilingual teaching is now developing fast in many local universities in China. However, the result is far from satisfaction. Inappropriate teaching strategies, learning materials as well as insufficient qualified bilingual teachers bring about the students’ lack of learning motivation, and thus to hamper the development of bilingual teaching. It is hoped that this paper can enrich the knowledge of bilingual teaching in local universities of China and provide useful and valuable information for students and teachers who are interested in this field. At the same time, it also provides a useful guidance for the future bilingual teaching practitioners.
