PurposeIn order to give full play to the function of noise reduction of asphalt pavement, it is necessary to understand its internal sound absorption mechanism. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to establish a micro model of the pore structure of asphalt mixture with the help of finite element method (FEM), discuss the noise reduction mechanism of asphalt pavement from the micro perspective and analyze and evaluate the noise attenuation law of the pore structure.Design/methodology/approachThe FEM was used to establish the microscopic model of the pore structure of asphalt mixture. Based on the principle of acoustics, the noise reduction characteristics of asphalt pavement were simulated. The influence of gradation and pore characteristics on the noise reduction performance of asphalt pavement was analyzed.FindingsThe results show that the open graded friction course-13 (OGFC-13) has excellent performance in noise reduction. The resonant sound absorption structure composed of its large porosity can effectively reduce the pavement noise. For asphalt concrete-13 (AC-13) and stone matrix asphalt-13 (SMA-13), the less resonant sound absorption structure makes them have poor sound absorption effect. In addition, the variation rules of noise transmission loss (TL) curve and sound absorption coefficient curve of three graded asphalt mixtures were obtained. At the same time, the peak noise reduction values of OGFC-13, AC-13 and SMA-13 were obtained, which were 650Hz, 1000Hz and 800Hz, respectively.Originality/valueThe results show that the simulation results can well reflect and express the experimental results. This will provide a reference for further exploring the sound absorption mechanism and its variation rule of porous asphalt pavement. It also has some positive significance for the application of low noise asphalt pavement.

In Korea, road noise is assessed as a measurement method of exterior noise emitted by road vehicle for management standards by the National Institute of Environmental Sciences. In this method, the noise felt at the actual pickup point is measured as LAeq (the roadside equivalent noise level). Recently, to clarify the standard for measuring noise on low-noise pavements, the CPX (ISO11819-2; Close-proximity method) was first introduced in the Porous Pavement Guidelines of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. According to ISO, the CPX adopts the side microphone as a mandatory measurement location, and the rear optional. The side location has been a mandatory due to its high correlation with SPB (ISO 11819-1, Statistical Pass-by method). However, according to our previous study on the correlation evaluation between L and CPX rear microphone noise level, both noise reduction effect was about 9-12 dB(A) showed a high correlation in Korea where heavy road traffic is common. The following study aims to show the consistent correlation between the L and CPX rear noise level. Furthermore, it is intended to be helpful in selecting the location of the CPX microphone that can most effectively represent the actual noise on the low-noise pavement in Korea.

In this paper, the new method for OCT images denoizing based on empirical mode decomposition (EMD) is proposed. The noise reduction is a very important process for following operations to analyze and recognition of tissue structure. Our method does not require any additional operations and hardware modifications. The basics of proposed method is described. Quality improvement of noise suppression on example of edge-detection procedure using the classical Canny's algorithm without any additional pre- and post-processing operations is demonstrated. Improvement of raw-segmentation in the automatic diagnostic process between a tissue and a mesh implant is shown.
