The effects upon the performance of an air-to-water copper finned-tube crossflow heat exchanger due to condensation on the outer surface are considered. A four-tube, two-pass heat exchanger was tested over a Reynolds number range (based on hydraulic diameter) from 400 to 1500. The coil was operated both in overall parallel and overall counterflow configurations. Convective heat and mass transfer coefficients are presented as plots of Colburn j-factor versus Reynolds number. Pressure losses are, similarly, presented as plots of the friction factor versus Reynolds number. Enhancement of sensible heat transfer due to the presence of a condensate film is also considered.

A numerical investigation of the flow and heat transfer in a two-row finned-tube heat exchanger is conducted with a three-dimensional conjugated model using the CFD software. The results show that, compared to the quadrate slotted fin, the circular slotted fin have good heat transfer performance in that the percentage increase in heat transfer is higher than that in the friction factor. Within the Reynolds number range compared ( from 1,270 to 8,892), the Nusselt number of new slit 1 is about 25.6-61.6% and 20.8-57.5%, while new slit 2 is about 26.8-33.6% and 25.8-33.0%, higher than that of the quadrate slotted fin surface at identical pressure drop and the identical pumping power, respectively. For the two-row plate fin-and-tube heat exchanger, new slit 2 is recommended for the use in air-conditioning because its integrative design.

Three-dimensional numerical study is performed for heat transfer and resistance characteristics as well as comprehensive performance of two kinds H-type (single and double) finned tube. It is found that the heat transfer and resistance characteristics as well as comprehensive performance of H-type finned tube are influenced by the Reynolds number of gas. With the growth of Reynolds number, the air-side Nusselt number rises gradually and the heat transfer performance gets better and better, whereas the air-side Euler number drops step by step until close to a fixed value. The comprehensive performances of both single H-type finned tube and double ones are weaken progressively. When Reynolds number value is same, the convective heat transfer, pressure drop, air-side Nusselt number and Euler number of single H-type finned tube are bigger than those of double ones. The single H-type finned tube expression is much better than double ones in comprehensive performance and heat transfer.

A numerical study was conducted to investigate the effects of dimple depth on the flow and heat transfer characteristics in a pin fin-dimple channel, where dimples are located spanwisely between the pin fins. The study aimed at promoting the understanding of the underlying convective heat transfer mechanisms in the pin fin-dimple channels and improving the cooling design for the gas turbine components. The flow structure, friction factor, and heat transfer performance of the pin fin-dimple channels with various dimple depths have been obtained and compared with each other for the Reynolds number range of 8200–80,800. The study showed that, compared to the pin fin channel, the pin fin-dimple channels have further improved convective heat transfer performance, and the pin fin-dimple channel with deeper dimples shows relatively higher Nusselt number values. The study still showed a dimple depth-dependent flow friction performance for the pin fin-dimple channels compared to the pin fin channel, and the pin fin-dimple channel with shallower dimples shows relatively lower friction factors over the studied Reynolds number range. Furthermore, the computations showed the detailed characteristics in the distribution of the velocity and turbulence level in the flow, which revealed the underlying mechanisms for the heat transfer enhancement and flow friction reduction phenomenon in the pin fin-dimple channels.

Experimental research was conducted to reveal the effects of nanofluids on heat transfer performance in a double-tube heat exchanger. With nanoparticle weight fraction of 0.5-2.0% and Reynolds number of 4500-14500, the flow resistance and heat transfer were analyzed by using six nanofluids, i.e., CuO-water, Al2O3-water, Fe3O4-water, ZnO-water, SiC-water, SiO2-water nanofluids. Results show that SiC-water nanofluid with a weight concentration of 1.5% provides the best improvement of heat transfer performance. 1.0% CuO-water and 0.5% SiO2-water nanofluids have lower friction factors in the range of Reynolds number from 4500-14500 compared to the other nanofluids. Based on test results of heat transfer performance and flow resistance, the 1.0% CuO-water nanofluid shows a great advantage due to a relatively high heat transfer performance and a low friction factor. Finally, empirical formulae of Nusselt numbers for various nanofluids were established based on experimental data tested in the double-tube heat exchanger.
