Some of termites have been introduced outside their native ranges, and it has been suggested that both wood-eating and wood-nesting lifestyles are critical for the transportation of propagules. Here, we present the first record of the soil-feeding and soil-nesting termite Pericapritermes nitobei (Isoptera: Termitidae) in the Motobu Peninsula on the northern part of Okinawa Island in the Central Ryukyus. The fact that the previous extensive surveys of termites in the Ryukyu Archipelago did not detect P. nitobei in the Central Ryukyus, including the Motobu Peninsula, and its discontinuous distribution, indicate that P. nitobei has been recently introduced into the Motobu Peninsula of Okinawa Island from the Yaeyama Islands, similar to the fungus-growing and soil-nesting termite Odontotermes formosanus (Isoptera: Termitidae). Together with O. formosanus in the southern part of Okinawa Island, our findings in this study raise the possibility that non-wood-feeding and non-wood-nesting termites can be introduced and established outside their native ranges by human activities.

Gnathia maculosa sp. nov. is described from males reared in a laboratory from larvae that were collected as ectoparasites on elasmobranchs, caught off Okinawa Island in the Ryukyu Archipelago, southwestern Japan. The species is most similar to G. trimaculata but it is distinguished from G. trimaculata by deeper and narrower dorsal sulcus, a narrower body, and the wider pylopod. Gnathia trimaculata, previously recorded from Great Barrier Reef, Australia, was also collected from elasmobranchs caught off Okinawa Island. The record of G. trimaculata from Okinawa indicates a wide range of the distribution of the gnathiids inhabiting elasmobranchs.

Two genera of Euconnus-like Stenichnini are reported to occur in Japan: Himaloconnus Franz, 1979 and Nogunius gen. n. Specimens of Himaloconnus collected on islands of the Ryukyu archipelago are identified as H. klapperichianus (Franz), previously known to inhabit Taiwan, but morphological differences were found among disjunctive populations and in consequence three new subspecies are proposed: H. klapperichianus yaeyamanus ssp. n. (Yaeyama Islands), H. klapperichianus amamianus ssp. n. (Amami-Ôshima), and H. klapperichianus okinawanus ssp. n. (Okinawa Island). Morphological structures of Japanese Himaloconnus are illustrated in detail and the diagnosis of this genus is emended, to exclude variable characters. Nogunius gen. n. is established to accommodate four species known only from Japan: N. sokani sp. n. (Okinawa Island), N. aogashimanus sp. n. (Aogashima, Izu Islands), N. kerri sp. n. (Ishigaki Island), and N. fukuuzanus sp. n. (Okinawa Island). Identification key to Japanese genera of Stenichnini is updated.

Liopropoma aragai Randall & Taylor 1988 is redescribed based on the holotype and non-type specimens from Japan and Taiwan. Diagnostic characters of the species and the status of Taiwanese specimens previously referred to L. aragai are reassessed. Liopropoma lemniscatum Randall & Taylor 1988, previously recorded only from the Pacific coast of Japan and the Ryukyu Archipelago, and L. lunulatum (Guichenot 1863), previously known from Okinawa Island (Japan), Guam, Réunion, Rarotonga and Tahiti, are redescribed, both being confirmed for the first time by voucher specimens from Taiwanese waters. A detailed description of each species and a key to Taiwan Liopropoma Gill 1861 is provided.

Ten species of Cephennomicrus are currently known to occur in Japan, predominantly in the Ryūkyū Archipelago. These extremely small beetles (adults of Japanese species do not exceed 1.2 mm) are rarely collected, and their true diversity may be in fact much greater. Two more species are described in the present study: C. aji sp. n. inhabiting Okinawa island, and C. ushimanus sp. n. found on Amami Ôshima island. Cephennomicrus aji has the smallest adults of all Japanese Scydmaeninae; the holotype male measures merely 0.66 mm of body length. The distribution of Japanese Cephennomicrus species is summarized, with the aedeagus of each species illustrated on the distribution map, to facilitate identifications and further study on this broadly distributed but poorly known cephenniine genus.

A new seborgiid, Seborgia cavernicola sp. nov. is described from a submarine cave in Okinawa Island, Ryukyu Islands as the first record of the family from Japan. This species differs from its congeners by the following combination of characters: body without microspinules; eyes fainted, without ommatidia; epimeral plates with posterodistal angle produced into pointed process; main flagellum of antennule 4-articulate; article 2 of main flagellum of antennule longest; propodus of gnathopod 2 as long as wide; gland cone of antenna directed anteriorly; maxilla bilobed; uropod 3 biramous; and telson without setae and setules. A key to species of the genus is provided.
