Previous work has demonstrated a role for the Drosophila EGF receptor (Torpedo/DER) and its ligand, Gurken, in the determination of anterioposterior and dorsoventral axes of the follicle cells and oocyte. The roles of DER in establishing the polarity of the follicle cells were examined further, by following the expression of DER-target genes. One class of genes (e.g. kekon) is induced by the DER pathway at all stages. Broad expression of kekon at the stage in which the follicle cells migrate posteriorly over the oocyte, demonstrates the capacity of the pathway to pattern all follicle cells except the ventral-most rows. This may provide the spatial coordinates for the ventral-most follicle cell fates. A second group of target genes (e.g. rhomboid (rho)) is induced only at later stages of oogenesis, and may require additional inputs by signals emanating from the anterior, stretch follicle cells. The function of Rho was analyzed by ectopic expression in the stretch follicle cells, and shown to induce a non-autonomous dorsalizing activity that is independent of Gurken. Rho thus appears to be involved in processing a DER ligand in the follicle cells, to pattern the egg chamber and allow persistent activation of the DER pathway during formation of the dorsal appendages.

This analytical study models features of the interaction of flow distortions, such as gusts and wakes, with blade rows of advance-type fans and compressors having high-tip Mach numbers. A typical distortion is assumed to have harmonic time dependence and is described, at a far upstream location, in three orthogonal spatial coordinates by a double Fourier series. It is convected at supersonic velocity relative to a linear cascade described as an unrolled annulus. Conditions are selected so that the component of this velocity parallel to the axis of the turbomachine is subsonic, permitting interaction between blades through the upstream as well as downstream flow media. A strong, nearly normal shock is considered in the blade passages which is allowed curvature and displacement. The flows before and after the shock are linearized relative to uniform mean velocities in their respective regions. Solution of the descriptive equations is by adaptation of the Wiener-Hopf technique. This enables a determination of distortion patterns through and downstream of the cascade, and of pressure distributions on the blade surfaces. Details of interaction of the distortion with the in-passage shock are discussed. Influences of amplitude, wavelength, and phase of the distortion on lifts and moments of cascade configurations are presented. Numerical results are clarified by reference to an especially orderly pattern of upstream vortical motion in relation to the cascade parameters.

The article gives a brief analysis of methods and algorithms for the transformation of spatial rectangular coordinates to curvilinear coordinates - geodetic latitude, geodetic longitude, geodetic height. Two algorithms for solving the equation for determining longitude are considered. Three formulas used to calculate the height are analyzed, with an estimate of their errors due to the approximate latitude. The shortcomings of mathematical solutions to these problems are revealed. A study of different approaches and methods for solving the transcendental equation for determining the latitude, based on the theory of separation of the root of the equation, is performed. Using this technique, iterative processes were performed to calculate the reduced latitude , using trigonometric identities, by introducing an auxiliary angle and transforming it to an algebraic quartic equation, which Borkowski solves by the Ferrari's method. The determination of the root isolation interval allowed using the chord method (proportional parts) to determine the latitude. In all cases, estimates of the convergence of the iterative processes that facilitate the comparative analysis of the proposed solutions are obtained. By further decreasing the separation interval of the root, the accuracy of the non-iterative determination of the latitude is improved by the Newton method.

AbstractBio-logging devices equipped with inertial measurement units—particularly accelerometers, magnetometers, and pressure sensors—have revolutionized our ability to study animals as necessary electronics have gotten smaller and more affordable over the last two decades. These animal-attached tags allow for fine scale determination of behavior in the absence of direct observation, particularly useful in the marine realm, where direct observation is often impossible, and recent devices can integrate more power hungry and sensitive instruments, such as hydrophones, cameras, and physiological sensors. To convert the raw voltages recorded by bio-logging sensors into biologically meaningful metrics of orientation (e.g., pitch, roll and heading), motion (e.g., speed, specific acceleration) and position (e.g., depth and spatial coordinates), we developed a series of MATLAB tools and online instructional tutorials. Our tools are adaptable for a variety of devices, though we focus specifically on the integration of video, audio, 3-axis accelerometers, 3-axis magnetometers, 3-axis gyroscopes, pressure, temperature, light and GPS data that are the standard outputs from Customized Animal Tracking Solutions (CATS) video tags. Our tools were developed and tested on cetacean data but are designed to be modular and adaptable for a variety of marine and terrestrial species. In this text, we describe how to use these tools, the theories and ideas behind their development, and ideas and additional tools for applying the outputs of the process to biological research. We additionally explore and address common errors that can occur during processing and discuss future applications. All code is provided open source and is designed to be useful to both novice and experienced programmers.
