Testing open-source visualization tools with small- and medium-sized enterprises ecosystem data: Towards the understanding of innovation ecosystem design

This article explores open-source visualization tools to enhance the understanding of small- and medium-enterprise (SME) ecosystem structures. Ecosystem approaches are becoming important in business strategy and innovation where organizations are heavily relying on inter-firm resources to innovate. Consequently, the traditional firm-focused business models face challenges, making it difficult for interconnected and diverse actors to co-create across firm boundaries. This challenge is even worse for manufacturing SMEs, who often lack the tools to make sense of their innovation ecosystem structures. We carried out a rich ethnographic investigation in three cases in the United Kingdom: the ceramic artist ecosystem, the 3D printing bureau ecosystem and the FabLab ecosystem. From the initial thematic analysis results, all actors highlighted the difficulty in understanding ecosystem networks. The following ecosystem attributes were identified as essential in understanding SME ecosystem structures: clusters and bridges, tie size, structural holes, role structure and interactivity. In this article, fourteen open-source visualization tools are tested to compare how well different tools reveal the six ecosystem attributes. Our findings demonstrate that open-source visualization tools have different affordances, most of which are useful in revealing ecosystem attributes. Results show that most visualization tools help aid the understanding of SME ecosystem structures. This study contributes new knowledge on the scarce subject of designing and managing ecosystems, presenting a unique approach to explore and understand ecosystem configurations. The study identifies limitations in open-source visualization tools and offers the design management community a set of recommendations for further development of visualization tools to support decision-making.

In recent years, technological progress in smart devices and artificial intelligence has also led to advancements in digital health. Digital health tools are especially prevalent in diabetes treatment and improving lifestyle. In digital health’s innovation ecosystem, new alliance networks are formed not only by medical device companies and pharmaceutical companies but also by information and communications technology (ICT) companies and start-ups. Therefore, while focusing on digital health for diabetes, this study explored the characteristics of companies with high network centralities. Our analysis of the changes in degree, betweenness, and eigenvector centralities of the sample companies from 2011 to 2020 found drastic changes in the company rankings of those with high network centrality during this period. Accordingly, the following eight companies were identified and investigated as the top-ranking technology sector companies: IBM Watson Health, Glooko, DarioHealth, Welldoc, OneDrop, Fitbit, Voluntis, and Noom. Lastly, we characterized these cases into three business models: (i) intermediary model, (ii) substitute model, and (iii) direct-to-consumer model, and we analyzed their customer value.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to emphasize the importance and means of making corporate social responsibility (CSR) an integral part of corporate strategy with the help of case studies. Design/methodology/approach – The article explores the transformation of business from being egocentric to socially responsible. With the use of examples it demonstrates how integrating CSR into strategy can create sustainable business models. Findings – Firms need to develop a framework for integrating CSR into their business strategy for long term successful survival. Social implications – Corporates and society are intertwined and mutually dependent. Business cannot survive without society's acquiescence nor succeed without its active support. Originality/value – The article explains the benefits of CSR and how to make it an integral part of business strategy to gain a competitive advantage.

Analyzing similarities and differences between biomolecular networks comparison through website intuitively could be a convenient and effective way for researchers. Although several network comparison visualization tools have been developed, none of them can be integrated into websites. In this paper, a web-based tool kit named dynamically adaptive Visualization of Biomolecular Network Comparison (Bio-NCV) is designed and developed. The proposed tool is based on Cytyoscape.js – a popular open-source library for analyzing and visualizing networks. Bio-NCV integrates arjor.js which including the Barnes-Hut algorithm and the Traer Physics library for processing in order to express the dynamically adaptive initialization. In addition, in order to maintain consistency, the counterparts in other networks will change while the nodes and edges in one of the compared networks change. Furthermore, Bio-NCV can deal with both directed and undirected graphs.

Digitalisation is seen as a vehicle for restructuring practices of social and health care in Finland. A conceptual model of connected health has evolved over time focusing on bringing together individuals and health professionals by means of ‘eHealth’, ‘telecare’, ‘telemedicine’ or ‘telehealth’ services and data connected via the Internet of Things. Digital transformation has triggered the emergence of innovative connected health services, as well as novel business models in the health and healthcare sector. Additionally, current literature emphasises growing importance of ecosystems in advancing the connected health business. The main reason for this, the increased understanding of business ecosystems would allow companies to create coherent services that would be easier for patients and health professionals (e.g. doctors and nurses) to use. This paper aims to develop and present a conceptual model for business ecosystem for connected health by mapping service needs for healthcare in the future. For this research, we conducted 16 meetings/workshops related to business models and business ecosystems. We also involved different end-user groups in our research (seven doctor interviews, four workshops with nurses and digital discussions and workshops with 12 parents with sick children). This qualitative case study illustrates the construct of the Nordic Central Hospital test lab- an innovation ecosystem for connected health service providers. Alongside the broad service map, we demonstrate the logic of value flow between different layers of services in the ecosystem. From an originality perspective, this multidisciplinary paper focuses on the pediatric day surgery to check the scope of connected health, which has not been done before.

AbstractTaking into account that the transparency is a quality of communication of sustainability information, as well as the role of digitalisation in ensuring the transparency, we proposed to study the perception of real estate entities related to promoting transparency in the relationship with stakeholders and the integration of information and communication technology in their business models. Applying a qualitative approach, we critically analysed the sustainability reports published by real estate companies from the EU, which represent important non-financial information sources for stakeholders. Transparency is mainly reflected in corporate governance, as real estate entities are increasingly concerned with maintaining open relationships with stakeholders and knowing their expectations to integrate them into the business strategy. We have noticed a broader approach of transparency in REIT entities and in reports that include an assurance statement. New digital technologies serve the purpose of improving transparency, which, although still poorly explored in real estate, offer new solutions to increase the efficiency and productivity of real estate activities. Property technology can improve real estate market transparency and liquidity, bringing lower transaction costs, which should positively impact the value of investment assets.

Abstract. Most copyrighted personality inventories facilitate norm-referencing through illustrative tables, yet their application to the many fields relevant to personality measurement is constrained by the need for stakeholders to possess the requisite financial resources to access them. Using an IPIP-NEO-300 dataset from Johnson’s IPIP-NEO data repository, we created open-source norm tables for different age groups (14–17 years; 18–25 years; and 30+ years) within a combined standardization sample from the United Kingdom (UK) and Ireland ( N = 18,591). The newly created tables are freely available online ( https://osf.io/tbmh5 ), and there is no need to ask for permission to modify them. We provide general instructions that can be used to create open-source personality trait norms for other countries, settings, and age groups, as well as gender-specific norms. There is great potential for these norms to be used in various settings and their open-source freedoms may encourage future collaborations and investigations.

Open source approach to software development has been used to develop the so-called ‘horizontal infrastructure’ software such as databases and application servers. However, there is an increasing acceptance of open source approach for developing business applications like enterprise resource planning (ERP) software. Indeed, organizations are building business models around ERP and similar business application developed using open source. In this chapter, the authors analyze the business model of one such open source ERP and explain increasing importance of software licensing and partner networks in FOS-ERP business models.
