The expenses associated with maintenance activities and energy consumption account for a large portion of the total operation cost in manufacturing plants. Therefore, effective methods that can be used for smart maintenance decision-making and energy management to reduce the costs of these two sections and improve the competitiveness of manufacturing enterprise are of high interests to industry. Many efforts focusing on maintenance decision-making and energy management have been dedicated. However, most of the existing research focusing on these two topics has been conducted separately, very little work has been done from a joint perspective that considers the benefits from both manufacturing machine reliability improvement and energy cost reduction. In this paper, a joint maintenance and energy management method is proposed to identify the maintenance actions considering energy cost as well as other equipment health metrics. A numerical case based on a section of an automotive assembly line is used to illustrate the potential benefits of the proposed approach.

A random and statistically significant sample of 40 medium (12) and large (28) manufacturing plants of Apodaca, Mexico were surveyed using a structured and validated questionnaire to investigate the level of implementation of lean manufacturing, sustainable manufacturing, continuous improvement and operational efficiency and environmental responsibility in them, it is important to mention it was found that performance in the mentioned philosophies, on the two categories of plants is low, however large plants show a better performance than medium plants. In both cases, it is worrying that in the highly industrialized municipality of Apodaca,  Mexico are not decisively adopting the philosophies mentioned, as this compromises in a global world, in the medium and long term the viability of the plants, particularly the medium size plants. Finally this article shows the results of the answers to the items of questionnaire for the plants managers, and this can be useful to the management of the plants to identify and to define specific improvement actions towards priority areas.

Abstract Due to the rapidly rising energy price and increase in public awareness of environmental protection, the manufacturers are facing the ever-increasing moral and economic pressures from the community, government, and society. Hence, the significance of energy related studies in manufacturing systems has gradually become recognized in recent years. In most cases, the techniques to reduce the energy consumption are either renewable energy methods (solar, tidy and wind) or improving energy efficiency for existing energy modes. The approach to cut the energy related costs for manufacturing plants has not been comprehensively considered, although the same methods such as demand response and load shedding have been widely studied in the building research. In this paper, a brief analysis of the unique challenges to the application of the demand response technique in manufacturing systems is presented. The feasibility and profitability of demand response in manufacturing systems under the constraint of system throughput are studied and explored. An initial study about customer side decision making on demand response is introduced, and a numerical case of a section of a manufacturing system is used to show the benefits of the proposed idea, which illustrates over 6% bill reduction and over 5% consumption reduction during a billing cycle without sacrificing system throughput.

The sustainability of manufacturing processes lies in industrial planning and productive activity. Industrial plants are characterized by the management of resource (inputs and outputs), processing and conversion processes, which usually are organized in a linear system. Good planning will optimize the manufacturing and promoting the quality of the industrial system. Cradle to Cradle is a new paradigm for engineering and sustainable manufacturing that integrates projects (industrial parks, manufacturing plants, systems and products) in a framework consistent with the environment, adapted to the society and technology and economically viable. To carry it out, we implement this paradigm in the MGE2 (Genomic Model of Eco-innovation and Eco-design), as a methodology for designing and developing products and manufacturing systems with an approach from the cradle to cradle.

The main goal of manufacturing industry is to produce the end products on time with good quality and keep the resource wastage low. However, manufacturing industry face several challenges such as bottle necks in the workflow, unsynchronized production, and sudden increase in product demands. In this paper, we are proposing a management platform for textile manufacturing plants with following modules: (1) sewing workflow optimization (2) quality assurance workflow optimization and (3) finishing workflow optimizations. We have used Genetic Programming (GP) approach, to optimize the workflows, considering different factors that affect each workflow. Our results show that, using our proposed platform, the manufacturing workflows can be optimized and reduce the bottle necks in the workflows and resource wastage in the manufacturing plant.

Intensive manual labor enterprises in the developed world face challenges competing with products imported from countries where manufacturing costs are low. This reduces the volume of domestic production and leads to rapid loss of knowledge and experience in production processes. This study focuses on the Israeli footwear industry as a case study. Qualitative methodologies were applied, including in-depth interviews and field observations. A literature review on previous research, and contemporary trends was conducted. The field research examines challenges along the value chain in small factories. It finds that mass production paradigms impose a decentralized process between designers and manufacturers and therefore do not leverage local potential into a sustainable competitive advantage for small factories. The proposed solution is a digital and technological platform for small manufacturing plants. The platform mediates and designs the connections between production, technology, and design and enables the creation of a joint R&D system.

Foundries in manufacturing plants are characterized by hazardous working conditions. The paper makes an assessment of industrial health hazards, identifies groups of diseases dominant among the examined individuals. It is clear that gastrointestinal diseases make the largest percentage. The effect of destabilizing industrial factors that lead to the intestinal biome restructuring, help reduce the dominant microorganism’s group and increase opportunistic flora has been determined. The severity of this indicator correlates with professional working experience. Along with the fecal matter bacterial flora of the examined people, the protozoa that belong to the parasitic group (blastocysts, lamblia, amoeba) were identified, and Blastocystis spp. has the largest proportion. The biological properties of blastocysts were studied exemplified by anticarnosine activity (AcrA), which allows them to colonize the intestinal mucous membranes and helps displace obligate symbiotes against the decrease in the overall resistance of the macroorganism. The data obtained make it possible to forecast human health state under the conditions of anthropogenic-disturbed territories and plan measures to improve and protect workers’ health.
