Purpose Billions of entrepreneurs at the Base of the Pyramid (BoP) operate as small-scale producers within multi-tiered supply chain networks. Unfortunately, a majority of these entrepreneurs are simply unable to derive sufficient value from the network and are vulnerable to disasters and poverty. The purpose of this paper is to develop a typology that examines dynamic and triadic power relationships in order to create value chains for BoP producers. Design/methodology/approach This paper builds upon the available literature and a relevant historical case study to develop a typology. The validity of the typology is ascertained by examining and comparing two current BoP silk weaver communities in India. Findings The typology captures essential environmental variables and relates them to mediated and non-mediated forms of power which, in turn, shape the value derived from the supply chain network. Practical implications The typology provides specific recommendations for BoP producers, such as the formation of cooperatives, engaging in political unionization and ensuring that their social networks expand beyond local communities. Originality/value The typology brings together structuration theory and power and provides a framework for understanding supply value. This typology is generalizable to dynamic multi-tiered supply chain networks.

Nowadays, the importance of caring about tremendous undesirable economical and technological effects of disruptions has impelled many researchers to design reliable supply chain networks. Moreover, the issue of intrinsic imprecision of input parameters should be gingerly regarded in the design of supply chain networks because it could have inverse impact on the quality of long-term planning decisions. Consequently, to handle the noted problems, in this paper, a reliable closed-loop supply chain network is formulated in which a new reliability method is introduced. The proposed formulation can effectively enable the design of a reliable network under different kinds of disruptions besides seeking for minimum overall costs of network design. On the one hand, a new effectual robust possibilistic programming (RPP) model is developed to confront with business-as-usual uncertainty in input parameters. Lastly, a real industrial case study is employed to validate the utility and practicability of the rendered model as well as presenting the efficiency and felicity of the developed RPP model.

The apparel global supply chain is fragmented and globalized, making it challenging to satisfy consumers’ wants and needs. Thus, to satisfy the consumer's wants and needs, global supply chain management is critical to a brand's success in the marketplace. The goal of this study was to gain an in-depth, holistic, and contextualized understanding of the experience and knowledge Mindy Scheier, an adaptive apparel advocate, gained by managing and negotiating the existing supply chain functions during her collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger® to launch the first mainstream children's adaptive apparel line. To achieve this goal, a case study was deployed. The authors found that supply chain networks required unique adaptations to their existing manufacturing processes to ensure the adaptive design innovations were viable; however, those supply chain adaptations were not significant. Further, the authors found that a collaborative partnership with an advocate seemingly provided a competitive advantage in the marketplace.

This paper proposes an agent-based model for evaluating the effect of business interoperability on the performance of cooperative supply chain networks. The model is based on insights from the Industrial Marketing and Purchasing network approach and the complex systems theory perspective. To demonstrate its applicability, an explanatory case study regarding a Portuguese reverse logistics cooperative supply chain network is presented. Face-to-face interviews and forms were used to collect data. The findings show that the establishment of appropriate levels of business interoperability has helped to reduce several non-value-added interaction processes and consequently improve the operational performance of the Valorpneu network. Regarding the research implications, this paper extends the current knowledge on business interoperability and an important problem in business: how business interoperability gaps in dyadic organizational relationships affect the network of companies that the two companies belong to—network effect. In terms of practical implications, managers can use the proposed model as a starting point to simulate complex interactions between supply chain network partners and understand better how the performance of their networks emerges from these interactions and from the adoption of different levels of business interoperability.

Current supply chain methods are having difficulties in resolving problems arising from the lack of trust in supply chains. The root reason lies in two challenges brought to the traditional mechanism: self-interests of supply chain members and information asymmetry in production processes. Blockchain is a promising technology to address these problems. The key objective of this paper is to present qualitative analysis for blockchain in supply chain as the decision-making framework to implement this new technology. The analysis method used Val IT business case framework, validated by the expert judgements. The further study needs to be elaborated by either the existing organization that use blockchain or assessment by the organization that will use blockchain to improve their supply chain management.
