AbstractLet X and Y be compact Hausdorff spaces, E be a real or complex Banach space and F be a real or complex locally convex topological vector space. In this paper we study a pair of linear operators S, T : A(X, E) → C(Y, F) from a subspace A(X, E) of C(X, E) to C(Y, F), which are jointly separating, in the sense that Tf and Sg have disjoint cozeros whenever f and g have disjoint cozeros. We characterize the general form of such maps between certain classes of vector-valued (as well as scalar-valued) spaces of continuous functions including spaces of vector-valued Lipschitz functions, absolutely continuous functions and continuously differentiable functions. The results can be applied to a pair T : A(X) → C(Y) and S : A(X, E) → C(Y, F) of linear operators, where A(X) is a regular Banach function algebra on X, such that f ⋅ g = 0 implies Tf ⋅ Sg = 0, for all f ∈ A(X) and g ∈ A(X, E). If T and S are jointly separating bijections between Banach algebras of scalar-valued functions of this class, then they induce a homeomorphism between X and Y and, furthermore, T−1 and S−1 are also jointly separating maps.

AbstractLet X, Y be compact Hausdorff spaces and E, F be Banach spaces. A linear map T: C(X, E) → C(Y, F) is separating if Tf, Tg have disjoint cozeroes whenever f, g have disjoint cozeroes. We prove that a biseparating linear bijection T (that is, T and T-1 are separating) is a weighted composition operator Tf = h · f o ϕ. Here, h is a function from Y into the set of invertible linear operators from E onto F, and ϕ, is a homeomorphism from Y onto X. We also show that T is bounded if and only if h(y) is a bounded operator from E onto F for all y in Y. In this case, h is continuous with respect to the strong operator topology.

AbstractLet A and M be closed linear operators defined on a complex Banach space X and let a ∈ L1(ℝ+) be a scalar kernel. We use operator-valued Fourier multipliers techniques to obtain necessary and sufficient conditions to guarantee the existence and uniqueness of periodic solutions to the equationwith initial condition Mu(0) = Mu(2π), solely in terms of spectral properties of the data. Our results are obtained in the scales of periodic Besov, Triebel–Lizorkin and Lebesgue vector-valued function spaces.

Abstract Galego and Samuel showed that if K, L are metrizable, compact, Hausdorff spaces, then $C(K)\widehat{\otimes}_\pi C(L)$ is c0-saturated if and only if it is subprojective if and only if K and L are both scattered. We remove the hypothesis of metrizability from their result and extend it from the case of the twofold projective tensor product to the general n-fold projective tensor product to show that for any $n\in\mathbb{N}$ and compact, Hausdorff spaces K1, …, K n , $\widehat{\otimes}_{\pi, i=1}^n C(K_i)$ is c0-saturated if and only if it is subprojective if and only if each K i is scattered.

For example, under the conditions given, λ −Thas closed range if, and only if, λ −T†has closed range.These general results are shown to apply to certain classes of integral operators acting on spaces of continuous functions.

AbstractThe investigations of the smooth points in the spaces of continuous function were started by Banach in 1932 considering function space $$\mathcal {C}(\Omega )$$ C ( Ω ) . Singer and Sundaresan extended the result of Banach to the space of vector valued continuous functions $$\mathcal {C}(\mathcal {T},E)$$ C ( T , E ) , where $$\mathcal {T}$$ T is a compact metric space. The aim of this paper is to present a description of semi-smooth points in spaces of continuous functions $$\mathcal {C}_0(\mathcal {T},E)$$ C 0 ( T , E ) (instead of smooth points). Moreover, we also find necessary and sufficient condition for semi-smoothness in the general case.

Let X be a complex Banach space and Cb(Ω:X) be the Banach space of all bounded continuous functions from a Hausdorff space Ω to X, equipped with sup norm. A closed subspace A of Cb(Ω:X) is said to be an X-valued function algebra if it satisfies the following three conditions: (i) A≔{x⁎∘f:f∈A,  x⁎∈X⁎} is a closed subalgebra of Cb(Ω), the Banach space of all bounded complex-valued continuous functions; (ii) ϕ⊗x∈A for all ϕ∈A and x∈X; and (iii) ϕf∈A for every ϕ∈A and for every f∈A. It is shown that k-homogeneous polynomial and analytic numerical index of certain X-valued function algebras are the same as those of X.

In this paper, we consider positive linear operators L representable in terms of stochastic processes Z having right-continuous non-decreasing paths. We introduce the equivalent notions of derived operator and derived process of order n of L and Z, respectively. When acting on absolutely continuous functions of order n, we obtain a Taylor's formula of the same order for such operators, thus extending to a positive linear operator setting the classical Taylor's formula for differentiable functions. It is also shown that the operators satisfying Taylor's formula are those which preserve generalized convexity of order n. We illustrate the preceding results by considering discrete time processes, counting and renewal processes, centred subordinators and the Yule birth process.

The fundamental work on approximation in weighted spaces of continuous functions on a completely regular space has been done mainly by Nachbin ([5], [6]). Further investigations have been made by Summers [10], Prolla ([7], [8]), and other authors (see the monograph [8] for more references). These authors considered functions with range contained in the scalar field or a locally convex topological vector space. In the present paper we prove some approximation results without local convexity of the range space.
