Abstract This paper focuses on tax evasion and tax avoidance in Iceland, and on how special interest groups have shaped the taxation system to serve their own ends. The period covered is from 1930, when the present Icelandic system of power was established, to the present. Tax evasion is sometimes an intended, and other times an unintended response to taxation.Willful tax evasion is more likely to occur if consensus regarding fairness and equality of the tax-code is lacking. Tax evasion is an integral part of the “underground economy”, or more formally, the Non-Observed Economy (NOE).Measuring the size and scope of the NOE in general, and tax evasion in particular, is a difficult task.We compare results from three methods for estimating the size of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP): the production approach, the expenditure approach, and the income approach. The results of applying these three methods should, in principle, be identical, but they are not. We use the difference, guided by historical facts and anecdotes, to give an idea of the magnitude of tax evasion during the 20th century. We suggest that the construction of the tax system to serve special interest groups may have disrupted the social, judicial, political and economic balance of the Icelandic “project”.

Netizens around the world increasingly use blogs to share thoughts and opinions, create special interest groups, collaborate, and debate on issues. However, the social influence of blogs remains largely undetermined. This paper presents the outcomes of a study which investigates how the influence of blogs can be measured quantitatively. The purpose of the study was to determine how to assess the social influence of blogs and to develop two new tools for measuring blog influence: the Blog Influence Index (BII) and Blog Influence Analyzer (BIA). These tools were applied to identify top influential blogs in the blogosphere community of Malaysia. The results indicate that the top 10 most influential blogs in Malaysia fall under the categories of politics, entertainment, sports, lifestyle, and technology.

In 1988 education author Harriet Tyson wrote A Conspiracy of Good Intentions: America's Textbook Fiasco. It tells a chilling tale. "California," says Tyson, "has a special [textbook] ‘compliance commission’ that checks for compliance with all the social issues that are being pursued by special interest groups including feminists, a black power advocate, environmentalists, family values advocates and the like. The compliance commission counted how many female lead characters there are in the textbook, how many blacks and Chicanos appear in pictures, and so on." If the head counts didn't come out to their liking, the textbook either had to be rewritten or it would be rejected.

More than a quarter-century of research has documented the fact of an increased involvement of agriculture with the urban industrial system. Many of the social and cultural corollaries of this trend have been examined, notably the greater participation of farmers in special interest groups, the diminished importance of the rural neighborhood, the increased centralization of communal services, and a greater integration of farm people with the values of a mass society.
