The establishment in Costa Rica of the great naturalist Charles H. Lankester in the 19th century brought a tremendous increase in the knowledge of Costa Rican Orchidaceae. His desire to leave the collections kept at his farm for a scientific and educational purpose was finally accomplished in 1973 with the foundation of Lankester Botanical Garden (JBL). Since then, JBL has followed Lankester’s legacy with its consolidation as a leading center for the study of Neotropical orchids, resulting among others in more than 180 new Costa Rican species and records in the last 12 years. This manuscript includes the description of four new species and seven new records, as part of JBL’s contribution to the completion of the Costa Rican orchid inventory.

The fauna of semiaquatic bugs (Insecta: Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Gerromorpha) from Panama has been explored mainly between the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, with few reports since then, whereas that from Colombia has been intensively studied in the last decade. Here, we describe Rhagovelia joceliae Rodrigues & Moreira, sp. nov. (Veliidae: Rhagoveliinae), from Panama. Additionally, new records from these countries are presented for Mesovelia mulsanti White, 1879, Mes. zeteki Harris & Drake, 1941 (Mesoveliidae: Mesoveliinae), Lipogomphus leucostictus (Champion, 1898) (Hebridae: Hebrinae), Hydrometra caraiba Guérin-Méneville, 1857 (Hydrometridae: Hydrometrinae), Platyvelia brachialis (Stål, 1860), Stridulivelia (Stridulivelia) raspa (Hungerford, 1929) (Veliidae: Veliinae), R. elegans Uhler, 1894, R. perija Polhemus, 1997, R. rosensis Padilla-Gil, 2011 (Veliidae: Rhagoveliinae), Euvelia advena Drake, 1957, Microvelia albonotata Champion, 1898, Mi. fantastika Padilla-Gil, 2019, Mi. mimula White, 1879 (Veliidae: Microveliinae), Metrobates laudatus Drake & Harris, 1937, Telmatometra ujhelyii Esaki, 1926 (Gerridae: Trepobatinae), Brachymetra albinervus (Amyot & Serville, 1843) (Gerridae: Charmatometrinae), Potamobates anchicaya Polhemus & Polhemus, 1995 (Gerridae: Cylindrostethinae), Limnogonus hyalinus (Fabricius, 1803), and Tachygerris opacus (Champion, 1898) (Gerridae: Gerrinae).

This catalogue contains literature reports and new records of Costa Rican Hepaticae and Anthocerotae, proceeding from monographs, revisions, floristic inventories, ecological bryophyte studies and herbarium specimens. The nomenclature has been updated in several genera. A total of 582 hepatic and eight hornwort species are reported from Costa Rica. The present work adds 26 new species records, and excludes 49 dubious records. Three new synonyms are proposed: Taxilejeunea carinata Herzog (=Lejeunea anomala Lindenb. & Gottsche); Taxilejeunea standleyi Herzog (=T. obtusangula [Spruce] A. Evans) and Syzygiella gracillima Herzog (=S. perfoliata [Sw.] Spruce).

Background and Aims: Araceae is a worldwide family of herbaceous plants, most notable for its striking morphological diversity and broad habitat diversity. It comprises eight subfamilies, 143 genera, and 3667 species. The Central American region has about 780 species, of which 262 are distributed in Costa Rica. In this contribution, we include four new aroid records for the Costa Rican flora belonging to the genera Anthurium, Philodendron, and Spathiphyllum. In addition, nomenclatural aspects of A. myosuroides are discussed. Methods: The new records resulted from fieldwork on Fila Anguciana, Cerro Turrubares, and Volcán Miravalles. The correct taxonomic identity of the species was confirmed based on literature and comparison with herbarium specimens, especially type specimens from the herbaria of the Universidad de Panama (PMA) and the Missouri Botanical Garden (MO), as well as consultation of the JSTOR Global Plants database and the collections of the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle de Paris (P) online. Descriptions, taxonomic discussions, and figures of the morphological characteristics of the new records are provided. Key results: We present Anthurium roseospadix, A. myosuroides, Philodendron pseudauriculatum and Spathiphyllum dressleri as new records for the Costa Rican flora. Moreover, lectotypification for Pothos myosuroides is proposed. Conclusions: Considering the new records presented in this work, the aroid flora of Costa Rica now comprises 266 species, and the total species numbers for Anthurium, Philodendron, and Spathiphyllum increased to 94, 63, and 10, respectively.

We present and illustrate 11 new records of Orchidaceae from Costa Rica, and propose a new combination in Acianthera for Pleurothallis aberrans. Barbosella orbicularis and Myoxanthus speciosus, previously recorded from Costa Rica on the basis of doubtful vouchers, are confirmed to occur in the country and illustrated from Costa Rican vouchers. Warmingia margaritacea is reduced to the synonymy of Warmingia zamorana, a species previously known only from Ecuador. A new species, Epidendrum zunigae is described. This species is similar to E. guanacastense and E. isomerum, from which it differs by the narrow, lanceolate leaves, the greenish flowers, the apical half of the column purple with the clinandrium white, the sepals 11 mm long, and the creamy yellow, cordiform, acute, bicallose lip, wich is somewhat convex in natural position.

AbstractOmiodes Guenée is redescribed based on all New World species, including the type species O. humeralis Guenée. Four new species from Costa Rica, O. janzeni sp. n., O. hallwachsae sp. n., O. sirena sp. n., O. ochracea sp. n., are described. Ten new synonymies are established : Phostria disciiridescens Hampson is =O. croeceiceps (Walker), Phostria cayennalis Schaus is =O. grandis (Druce), Omiodes ochrosoma Felder & Rogenhofer and Phryganodes gazalis Schaus are =O. pandaralis (Walker), Nacoleia lenticurvalis Hampson, Phryganodes anchoritalis Dyar, and Phostria duplicata Kaye are =O. confusalis (Dognin), O. cervinalis Amsel is =O. martvralis (Lederer), Nacoleia indicata ab. pigralis Dognin and Botis fortificalis Möschler are =O. metricalis (Möschler). One new combination is recognized: O. pandaralis (Walker) was transferred from Coelorhynchidia Hampson. A key and an updated checklist to the neotropical Omiodes species is provided, including O. indicata (Fabricius), a worldwide pest. Ten species that do not belong in Omiodes are retained until appropriate generic placements are identified.

Two new species are described: Cobelura prenai, from Costa Rica, included in a new key to species of the genus; and Paranisopodus thalassinus, from Costa Rica, included in a previous key to species of the genus. Notes on Cobelura peruviana (Aurivillius, 1920) are provided and the holotype of Cobelura vermicularis Kirsch, 1889 is illustrated for the first time. Also, new geographical records are provided: Leptostylus orbiculus Bates, 1880, new country record for Costa Rica; Leptostylus quintalbus Bates, 1885, new country record for Mexico; and Anisopodus scriptipennis Bates, 1872, new state record in Mexico, and new province records in Costa Rica and Panama.

Twenty-five new species of neotropical Limacodidae, primarily from Central America, are described. The majority of these species (n=15) are from Parasa and Natada generic complexes, both presently known to contain only spiny caterpillars. In the Parasa complex, they include: Parasa figueresi, new species, Parasa joanae, new species, Parasa sandrae, new species, Parasa shirleyae, new species, Euclea mesoamericana, new species, Euclea zurquicola, new species, Euclea microcippus, new species, Euclea costaricana, new species, Euclea gajentaani, new species, Euclea josepsi, new species, Talima beckeri, new species, Talima weissi, new species, and Talima erojasi, new species. In the Natada complex, two new taxa are Natada delgadoi, new species, and Natada varablancana, new species. In a generic complex with hairy caterpillars, the Phobetron complex, six new taxa are: Phobetron guzmanae, new species, Isochaetes dwagsi, new species, Isochaetes kenjii, new species, Isochaetes heevansi, new species, Isochaetes tapantiensis, new species, and Vipsophobetron davisi, new species. In the Prolimacodes and Perola complexes, caterpillars are known to be smooth. New species in the Prolimacodes complex are Prolimacodes montanus, new species, and Dichromapteryx saborioi, new species, while the Perola complex includes Perola aenea, new species, and Epiperola browni, new species. Euclea microcippus, Parasa sandrae and Vipsophobetron davisi are the smallest species known to occur in their genera. Euclea mesoamericana and Parasa figueresi are relatively common in collections but have been mistakenly grouped with Euclea cippus (Cramer) and Parasa schausi Dyar, respectively. Each was reported from both Central and South America, but is now considered to be limited to South America. Talima weissi is closely related to the Mexican species T. assimilis (Dyar), sharing both a detachable clump of hairs on 8 th abdominal segment in males and large ductus seminalis, which hold the hairs, in females. Larval descriptions or hostplants are presented for P. sandrae, P. joanae, E. mesoamericana, E. gajentaani, T. beckeri, T. weissi, I. dwagsi, I. kenjii, I. heevansi, and V. davisi. Euclea zurquicola, E. josepsi, T. erojasi, N. delgadoi, N. varablancana, P. guzmanae, I. tapantiensis, and E. browni are known from only one locality, each in Costa Rica, while the last four are known only from unique specimens.

Plant diseases caused by Phytophthora species will remain an ever increasing threat to agriculture and natural ecosystems. Phytophthora literally means plant destroyer, a name coined in the 19th century by Anton de Bary when he investigated the potato disease that set the stage for the Great Irish Famine. Phytophthora infestans, the causal agent of potato late blight, was the first species in a genus that at present has over 100 recognized members. In the last decade, the number of recognized Phytophthora species has nearly doubled and new species are added almost on a monthly basis. Here we present an overview of the 10 clades that are currently distinguished within the genus Phytophthora with special emphasis on new species that have been described since 1996 when Erwin and Ribeiro published the valuable monograph ‘Phytophthora diseases worldwide’ (35).

Two species of Monstera, apparently endemic to Costa Rica, are newly described and illustrated. Monstera juliusii occurs in the southern Costa Rican portion of the Cordillera de Talamanca at 1600–2250 m, and has been confused with M. standleyana in herbaria. Monstera monteverdensis occurs in the Guanacaste and Tilarán cordilleras, and the northwestern part of the Cordillera Central, at 500–2300 m, and has been confused with M. epipremnoides, M. lentii and M. lechleriana in herbaria. Phenology and suggested conservation categories according to the IUCN Red List criteria are indicated for both new taxa.
