Abstract: The goal of this work was to study the species composition, the use of breeding sites, and the seasonal patterns of breeding activity of the anuran fauna from Parque Estadual Carlos Botelho - Núcleo Sete Barras, state of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. Fieldwork was carried out from September 2005 to October 2007 through two main methods: active visual search inside a 10 ha- permanent plot and aural and visual search in seven previously selected aquatic breeding habitats. Species richness was related to the sampling effort by means of species accumulation curve and through non-parametric estimators. Thirty-three species distributed in 12 families were recorded, from which 69% are endemic to the Atlantic Forest. Trachycephalus mesophaeus represents a new record for the park. Cycloramphus lutzorum is included as Data Deficient in the IUCN list. The species accumulation curve did not stabilize, showing some tendency to rise. The use of breeding sites by 20 species was compared using cluster analysis, which revealed two major groups: the first with five species (two habitat generalists and three stream specialists) and the second composed by the other species (with different reproductive modes associated with flooded environments). The breeding period of most species was associated to the rainy season (October to February), and only Scinax hayii showed continuous breeding activity during the entire period of study.

The Atlantic Forest is the home to a diverse and threatened fauna of amphibians. However, knowledge on these species is still scarce to many of its ecosystems, such as the Seasonal Forest. This study was aimed at determining the diversity of anurans in Parque Estadual Fritz Plaumann (PEFP), located in the municipality of Concórdia, Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. The PEFP comprises 741 ha, and is the only Conservation Unit of Seasonal Forest in Santa Catarina state. From August 2010 to July 2011 we surveyed frogs fortnightly during four to ten days, from sunset until approximately midnight. Active, audio and visual searches were carried out at breeding sites and favorable areas to meet the species. The sampling effort of the survey was evaluated with species accumulation curve considering the field expeditions as sample units. The species composition of PEFP was compared with 16 other different vegetal formations of the Atlantic Forest biome through similarity analysis. Twenty-three species were recorded. The accumulation curve approached an asymptote, indicating that most species of the area were observed. Most species were observed in lentic habitats of open areas. The anuran species composition of PEFP was similar to other areas of Mixed Ombrophile Forest and Seasonal Forest in southern region. Although PEFP comprised a relatively small area, the occurrence of habitat specialists, endangered amphibians that dependent on the forest, indicates the importance of this area for the conservation of the regional fauna. The continuation of long-term standardized studies is needed to monitor the population dynamics of recorded species and support alternative management practices, aiming at the conservation of anurans at the Seasonal Forest.

AbstractAnnual patterns of breeding activity of 28 anuran species were studied at Boracéia, an Atlantic Rainforest locality in the coastal mountains of Southeastern Brazil. Five patterns were evident: (1) species that call year-round; (2) opportunistic calling activity associated with rainfall; (3) explosive breeding; (4) winter activity; and (5) summer species with variable breeding seasons. The number of species with calling males was positively correlated with mean monthly temperature.

This study presents a list of species from igarapés tributaries of the rio Acre, Acre State, Brazil. Fish assemblages were sampled in October 2009, August and October 2010, using standard ichthyological gear, along fifteen sampling sites. A total of 11,395 specimens, distributed in 94 species, 24 families and six orders were collected. The most species-rich orders were Characiformes with 45 species (48.4%) and Siluriformes with 33 species (34.7%); from which Serrapinnus gr. microdon (22.4%), Otocinclus vittatus (20.4%), Phenacogaster pectinatus (10.9%), Brachychalcinus copei (5.8%) and Knodus sp. (5.3%) represented 64.8 % of the specimens captured. The species accumulation curve does not present a stabilization tendency, indicating that, additional sampling can increase the number of species. This study has a high importance for the knowledge of the rio Acre fish fauna composition and adds 52 new records of species to the fish fauna of the rio Purus.

Abstract We report diversity data and ecological aspects (richness, abundance and guilds) of bat assemblages in the Esteros del Iberá. We sampled four sites at Reserva Natural Don Luis, with an effort of 75 nights, 256 nets and 12 harp traps over six years. We made a species accumulation curve, Whittaker diagram, and calculated inventory completeness. A complete inventory for the area included 471 individuals belonging to 14 species of Phyllostomidae, Vespertilionidae, and Molossidae families. Insectivorous guilds present the greatest richness and abundance. Esteros del Iberá shelters a diversity of guilds, one threatened species, and a new bat record for the region.

The snake species richness of the Santubong Peninsula, Sarawak, Borneo, has been estimated previously by fitting a Weibull model to the rarefied species accumulation curve. In the present study, the estimation procedure was simulated in order to shed more light on its validity, i.e. its accuracy and precision. First, the estimate was updated on the basis of an additional, small-scale, survey carried out in 2011. Subsequently, survey-data were used to construct a simulation database. Twenty samples were randomly drawn from this database. Each sample was transformed into a rarefied species accumulation curve to which a Weibull model was fitted. For comparison, various related models were fitted as well. All applied models resulted in a downwardly biased estimate. The Weibull model performed best, providing the estimate of species richness with the smallest bias and thus highest accuracy. As for the precision of the estimate, a rather wide confidence interval was established.
