ABSTRACT Pinguipes brasilianus is a conspicuous and abundant rocky-reef fish inhabiting the Northern Patagonian gulfs of Argentina, Southwest Atlantic. This study describes its reproductive biology in this region. We made macroscopic and histological descriptions of the testis and ovary development, analyzed the evolution of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) in both sexes throughout the year, and estimated fecundity and length at 50% maturity for females. Pinguipes brasilianus is a multiple spawner with indeterminate annual fecundity and an extended reproductive season, encompassing austral spring and summer. Low GSI values in males (monthly means ranged between 0.11% and 0.75%) and low relative fecundity in female fish (between 2 and 44 oocytes/g) are consistent with a need of close proximity between male and female during oocyte fertilization, sexual courtship and with spawning in pairs and/or within reef crevices. The estimated length at 50% maturity (± SD) for females was 15.22 ± 0.43 cm total length. Although P. brasilianus shares the main reproductive features of its congeneric species Pinguipes chilensis , male GSI and female length at 50% maturity in P. brasilianus were markedly lower than those reported for P. chilensis , while relative and batch fecundity were greater in fish of the same size.

Fish were collected from localities in the Sydney region, New South Wales, Australia, from March 1991 to September 1993. Achoerodus viridis is a benthic carnivore and consumes a wide variety of prey items. Size-specific differences in diet were found. The diet of recruits (17-26 mm SL) collected in seagrass environments was dominated by tanaids, whereas that of rocky reef recruits was dominated by harpacticoid copepods. The diet of rocky reef fish then shifted to gammarid amphipods and other crustaceans (fish 50-150 mm SL) and to mussels and urchins (fish >300 mm SL). Juvenile fish on rocky reefs (450 mm SL) foraged in shallow fringing habitat, whereas adult fish (>200 mm SL) foraged in deeper turf and barrens habitats, reflecting the depth distribution of the species. Feeding rate of larger fish tended to be less than that of smaller fish. Variations in diet and feeding rate were also detected over the year but the patterns were not consistent between years. Among sites, there were differences in diet but these were not related to the position of sites inside an estuary or on the open coast. The results of this study provide information on the feeding ecology of a large labrid fish; this information will aid in understanding the population dynamics of the species.

The choice of appropriate conservation strategies for reef fishes depends on their mobility, degree of site fidelity and residence times. Here we report the results of a small-scale mark–recapture and resighting study conducted to investigate the spatial dynamics of the Argentine sandperch, Pseudopercis semifasciata. This is the flagship species of the rocky-reef fish assemblage from northern Patagonia, which has been the target of uncontrolled fishing since the early 1950s. About 19% of the fish tagged were recaptured up to four years after tagging. In total, 180 of 218 recaptured fish stayed in the reef of tagging. Thirty-six of 57 recaptures made at known locations within popular fishing areas of San José Gulf, densely covered by patchy reefs, occurred within 100 m of the tagging site, up to 793 days after tagging. Six fish were recovered more than 1 km from where they were tagged. Smaller fish were more prone to relocate, and were recovered farther from the tagging site. Fish stayed in the reefs for periods longer than a year; larger males remained longer in the same reefs. Our results indicate that relatively small reserves (in the order of a few kilometres) could be effective at protecting P. semifasciata populations within the northern Patagonian gulfs.

AbstractNo-take marine reserves (NTRs), i.e. areas with total fishing restrictions, have been established worldwide aiming to provide biodiversity and ecosystem conservation. Brazil has established NTRs, but currently lacks scientific knowledge and understanding of their ecological role, particularly regarding rocky reefs in subtropical regions. Consequently, this study aimed to contrast NTR, from the 30 year old Tupinambás Ecological Station, and comparable fished sites across a coastal biogeographic gradient to investigate the effect of fishing and habitat variability on the abundance and body-size of rocky reef fish. We used Baited Remote Underwater stereo-Video (stereo-BRUVs) and Diver Operated stereo-Video (stereo-DOVs) systems to simultaneously sample reef fish and habitat. Model selection and results identified habitat and biogeographic variables, such as distance from shore, as important predictor variables, explaining several aspects of the fish assemblage. The effect of protection was important in determining the abundance and body-size of targeted species, in particular for epinephelids and carangids. Conversely, species richness was correlated with habitat complexity and not with protection status. This is the first study to publish data using these novel survey methods in the Southeastern Atlantic and demonstrate their utility, in combination with an established network of NTR’s, to provide benchmarks for conservation and fisheries management.

ABSTRACT The reproductive biology and life cycle of Parona leatherjacket, Parona signata, present in Mar del Plata (38º 00’S 57º 33’W) coast, was studied. Samples were obtained monthly since January 2018 to February 2019 from the artisanal fishermen and the commercial fleet of Mar del Plata. A histological analysis was carried out and the main biologic-reproductive parameters were estimated: fecundity, oocyte frequency distribution and gonadosomatic index (GSI). Both the macroscopic and microscopic analyses showed reproductive activity in March and November. Mature females were recorded, which showed hydrated oocytes, as was evidenced by the histological procedures. Both, the histological and the oocyte diameter distribution analyses showed the presence of all oocyte maturation stages in ovaries in active-spawning subphase, indicating that P. signata is a multiple spawner with indeterminate annual fecundity. Batch fecundity ranged between 36,426 and 126,035 hydrated oocytes/ female. Relative fecundity ranged between 42 and 150 oocytes/ g female ovary free.

The Electric ray Discopyge tschudii is distributed in the Southwest Atlantic from southern Brazil to southern Argentina and in the Southeast Pacific from Peru to southern Chile. The main threat to this species is fishing. Discopyge tschudii is noncommercial and individuals caught are discarded on board. The present study analyzes the distribution and the morphological and reproductive characteristics of this ray in San Matías Gulf (SMG), Argentina. A total of 1087 individuals were analyzed. The species presented an aggregate distribution, with the main concentrations in the northern and eastern areas of SMG, at depths below 100 m. Males ranged from 9 to 43 cm and females from 11 to 38 cm. The species presented sexual dimorphism. Males were larger and heavier than females and also matured at larger sizes. Size at 50% of maturity was estimated at 30 cm for males and 21 cm for females. A total of 199 embryos were sampled and the proportion of sexes showed no significant differences from the expected 1:1. The number of embryos per female varied from 1 to 12. The most frequent values were 2 and 5. Length at birth was estimated at 82.17 ± 3.87 mm. Based on our findings, we hypothesize that the electric ray D. tschudii completes its reproductive cycle in SMG.

We provide here the first assessment of the composition, abundance and distribution of rocky reef fishes of Itaipu Sound, Rio de Janeiro, off the southeastern Brazilian coast. Monthly visual censuses, benthic quadrats and chain link transects were conducted over one year on rocky reefs at three islands (Menina, Mãe and Pai). A total of 2466 individual fish, belonging to 29 families and 42 species were recorded. The most abundant fish species were Parablennius pilicornis, Haemulon steindachneri, Orthopristis ruber and Diplodus argenteus. Sheltered and complex habitats showed the most abundant and diverse fish populations. There was a major significant separation between sampling sites and a secondary seasonal pattern. The three sites showed similar fish communities with locally structured environmental gradients according to their inherent habitat characteristics.

The role of large predatory fish in coastal communities is generally unknown because of overfishing. In order to understand the direct and indirect impacts of these increased population sizes on coastal food chains, the effect of areas with more fish predators on the survival and behaviour of potential prey was assessed. Juvenile lobsters, Jasus edwardsii (10–20 mm carapace length), were tethered on rocky reefs inside and outside marine reserves in northeastern New Zealand to assess survival under differing predator densities. Since rocky reef habitats in northeastern New Zealand include zones of kelp forest and barren reef, a two-way factorial design was used to determine the effects of predators, habitat, and the interaction of these two factors on juvenile lobster survival. Overall, the results indicated that neither varying large fish density nor varying kelp density had direct impacts on the survival rate of juvenile lobsters. Laboratory manipulations demonstrated behavioural changes by juvenile lobsters such that when a large predatory fish was present, juvenile lobsters spent significantly less time moving, even when separated from the predator by a porous barrier. Thus areas with more fish predators may increase juvenile lobster survival but potentially at the cost of reduced feeding opportunities.
