Migratory shorebirds are of the most threatened avian species due to effects of human activities and climate change. Physiological parameters are useful to evaluate the health status of free-living animals. Here we investigated lymphocytes, heterophils, heterophils/lymphocytes, and glucose for female and male Two-banded plovers (TBPLs), Charadrius falklandicus (Latham, 1790) during nonbreeding (body moult) and breeding (incubation), in coastal areas of northern Patagonia Argentina. We also measured corticosterone for first time for the species during breeding. Nonbreeding TBPLs were more likely to have higher physiological measurements that were not dependent on body moult nor body condition, being similar between sexes. Differences found in glucose are likely related to recent feeding in nonbreeding birds compared with fasting during incubation. The gregarious nonbreeding behaviour in comparison with the isolated breeding pairs, would increase the risk of acquiring parasites and /or pathogens inducing a response of the immune system reflected in higher values of lymphocytes. Baseline corticosterone during breeding was similar between sexes and were lower compared with other values reported for breeding plovers. TBPLs undergo energetically demanding physiological changes during the nonbreeding stage, strengthening the idea that conservation of the environmental resources at these locations may be more important than previously thought.

Tehuelche scallop, Aequipecten tehuelchus, is a commercially exploited species in Northern Patagonia, Argentina. Without genetic differentiation at the species level, A. tehuelchus presents three morphotypes: tehuelchus, madrynensis, and a non-common variant felipponei. The main goal of this study was to analyze the shell shape variation of Tehuelche scallop to differentiate and identify the phenotypic stocks. The shape differences between and within the two main morphotypes (tehuelchus and madrynensis) were assessed using geometric morphometrics in nine localities. The shell shape presented variability at geographic scale, with the morphologic traits that maximized the differentiation among localities between the tehuelchus and madrynensis morphotypes. Scallops from madrynensis morphotype presented higher and circular shell discs with smaller auricles than those from tehuelchus morphotype. Morphometric differentiation was also detected among localities of each morphotype, wherein most of the variability was related to the disc circularity and the symmetry of the auricles. The presence of morphologic variation in San Matias and San Josi gulfs, wherein a single genetic pool is shared, evidenced the plastic nature of the species. Given the distribution of this resource in distinct provincial jurisdictions, the differentiation of phenotypic stocks has relevance in the context of fishery management, especially if zoning and rotational strategies are implemented.

The Calbuco volcano ranks third in the specific risk classification of volcanoes in Chile and has a detailed eruption record since 1853. During 2015, Calbuco had a sub-Plinian eruption with negative impacts in Chile and Argentina, highlighting the need to determine the long-term history of its activity at a high-resolution time scale to obtain a better understanding of its eruptive frequency. We developed a continuous eruptive record of Calbuco for the 1514–2016 period by dendrochemical analysis of Fitzroya cupressoides tree rings at a biennium resolution using inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry. After comparing the chemical record of 20 elements contained in tree rings with historical eruptions, one group exhibited positive anomalies during (Pb/Sn) and immediately after (Mo/P/Zn/Cu) eruptions, with a Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) ≥ 3, and so were classified as chemical tracers of past eruptions (TPE). The tree-ring width chronology also exhibited significant decreases in tree growth associated with eruptions of VEI ≥ 3. According to these records, we identified 11 new eruptive events of Calbuco, extending its eruptive chronology back to the 16th century and determining a mean eruptive frequency of ~23 years. Our results show the potential to use dendrochemical analysis to infer past volcanic eruptions in Northern Patagonia. This information provides a long-term perspective for assessing eruptive history in Northern Patagonia, with implications for territorial planning.
