First record of Histiotus laephotis Thomas (Chiroptera, Vespertilionidae) from Brazil

The first record of Histiotus laephotis Thomas, 1916 from Brazil is reported here. An adult male was caught with a mist net in a barn located within an Araucaria pine forest in the municipality of Passos Maia, State of Santa Catarina, Southern Brazil (26º46'48"S and 52º03'34"W). This record extends the distribution of this species in South America. Morphological and taxonomic notes of this species are described as well.

Lasiurus egregius (Peters, 1870) is an insectivorous bat species known from Central and South America. This species has few confirmed records throughout its distribution. Here we report the first record of L. egregius from the northern coast of Paraná state, southern Brazil. We captured a female individual of L. egregius using an ultrathin mist-net installed over a river knee, at Salto Morato Natural Reserve, municipality of Guaraqueçaba. This is the fourteenth locality with confirmed occurrence of L. egregius, being eight of them in Brazil. The knowledge on the bat fauna in Paraná has been increasing in recent decades, mainly due to the new studies in coast areas of this state. In addition to contributing to the knowledge of the bat fauna from Paraná, the new record of L. egregius reinforces the essential role of the Salto Morato Natural Reserve in conserving bats in the southern portion of the Atlantic Forest.

The Black-capped Becard (Pachyramphus marginatus) has two geographically isolated subspecies, including the Atlantic Forest subspecies that is distributed from Pernambuco State to Paraná State. Here we report the first observation of the species in Santa Catarina State, southern Brazil. On 12 November 2019 an adult male of P. marginatus was observed in the municipality of São Francisco do Sul, on the northeastern coast of Santa Catarina, during an inventory for the creation of a protected area. The species was also observed on three other occasions in the same locality. These are the first known records for Santa Catarina and extend the known distribution range of this species 40 km southward. We also discuss some explanations for the records.

A New Species

The tribe Diglottini Eichelbaum, 1909 comprises two halophilous rove beetle genera Diglotta Champion, 1899, and Paradiglotta Ashe & Ahn, 2004. The tribe contains eight known species distributed in the Nearctic and West-Palaearctic regions, and also Fiji Islands and New Zealand. This tribe is recorded for the first time from South America with the description of a new species, Diglotta brasiliensis n. sp. from southern Brazil (Paraná). Characters of the mouthparts, aedeagus and spermatheca of the new species are illustrated and compared with other Diglotta species. Sexual dimorphism is reported for the first time in the genus.

Furipterus horrens is an insectivorous bat that occurs from Costa Rica to southeastern Bolivia and southern Brazil, with records in the Amazon, Caatinga, Cerrado and Atlantic Forest biomes. Despite this broad distributional range across South America, the species is currently known from few localities, and its habitat preferences are poorly known. We report the first record of Furipterus horrens for the Tocantins state, northern Brazil, based on four individuals collected in two caves surrounded by Neotropical savanna (Cerrado) in the Aurora do Tocantins municipality.

In this work, we describe the first occurrence record of the exotic species of deer Axis axis (Erxleben, 1777) from natural environments of the state of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. The study provides information about the implications of the invasion of the region’s ecosystem, which is seen as a negative factor in the local community and represents a major conservation challenge.

There is a lack of knowledge regarding Lepidoptera species in altitudinal grassland areas, especially in the state of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil. Here we report some records of Vanessa braziliensis (Moore, 1883) and Urbanus zagorus (Plötz, 1880) in high altitude areas. We have likely registered both the first record of U. zagorus for the state of Santa Catarina and the highest altitudinal record of V. braziliensis in Brazil.

Aparasphenodon bokermanni is a poorly known casque-headed tree frog found in São Paulo and Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. Here we provide two new records, one from Joinville, northeastern Santa Catarina, and the first record from Santa Catarina Island, Brazil, which extends to the south the range of the genus by approximately 150 km.

Despite being widely distributed in South America and having relatively large populations, little is known about the trophic ecology of the South American Tern (Sterna hirundinacea) and Cabot's Tern (Thalasseus acuflavidus). In Brazil, South American and Terns Cabot's breed in mixed colonies from the state of Espírito Santo to Santa Catarina. Here, we describe results of a study of the feeding ecology of these two species during the reproductive seasons of April to October of 2003, 2005 and 2006 from Cardos Island, Santa Catarina, Brazil. A total of 6248, 5140, and 4006 fishes were delivered to chicks or females by South American Terns; and 1157, 628 and 98 fish and or other prey items by Cabot's Terns during the breeding seasons of 2003, 2005, and 2006, respectively. Prey items identified included eight, seven and nine fish families for South American Terns; and, five, three and two families for Cabot's terns, in the three respective years. The number of food deliveries per chick for South American Terns was between 09:00 and 10:00 am in 2006, and between 11:00 and 12:00 am in 2005. Cabot's Terns chicks were fed in the early hours of the morning until late afternoon.

Pogoniopsis is an endemic and myco-heterotrophic orchid genus with only two species in Brazil that can be found growing under dense canopy. Pogoniopsis schenckii is more widely distributed, with records in the states of Bahia, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo. Here we record P. schenckii for the first time in Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil, in a subtropical broadleaved forest, as well the genus Pogoniopsis itself, expanding its southern distribution limit. In addition, a description and a distribution map of the collected specimens are presented.
