In gas metal arc welding (GMAW), for given welding conditions (e.g., current, electrode diameter, electrode material, etc.), the consumable electrode wire must be fed in such a speed that it dynamically balances the electrode melting speed in order to achieve a stable welding. In this article, a comprehensive model for GMAW was developed to study the interplay between the transport phenomena including the electrode melting and plasma arc, and the dynamically equilibrium wire feed speeds (WFSs) under different welding conditions. The predicted WFSs are in excellent agreement with published data that were obtained through the trial-and-error procedure.

AbstractNanoindentation is a test carried out in a small scale, during which a rigid indenter (of known hardness and geometry) is pressed into the tested material. The results of the test are the load and unload curves, from which the harerial characterized by high heterogeneity (like soil – composed of grains and particles of different size and mineral composition), the use of multiple nanoindentation on a predefined grid (Grid Indentation Technique) is reasonable. It allows for the determination of the morphology of the material in a selected scale of observation. In the study, nanoindetation tests were performed on samples of varved clay - soil composed of two alternately arranged layers - occurring near the city of Bełchatów in central Poland. Due to the layered structure of the material, the tests were carried out for both layers separately. The outcomes show that there are significant differences in the values of their mechanical properties. Application of the deconvolution technique also allowed for the estimation of the number of components of both layers and their mechanical properties.

Al-Mg-Si (AA6061) Al alloy plates were joined by the method of gas metal arc welding using Al-5Mg (ER5356) filler metal and were subjected to the oxidation test in flowing air environment at600∘Cfrom 8 to 40 hours and the weight gain was measured. The characteristic of oxide grown on welded zone surface was examined by SEM/EDS, XRD, and XPS. Oxide was observed to grow on the fused metal surface suggesting the possibility of modifying the oxide chemistry under high temperature environment. It was found that the oxidation behavior of fused metal affected by the nature of their oxide growth and morphology, was influenced by their welding process and the difference in the chemical composition.
