Al-Mg-Si (AA6061) Al alloy plates were joined by the method of gas metal arc welding using Al-5Mg (ER5356) filler metal and were subjected to the oxidation test in flowing air environment at600∘Cfrom 8 to 40 hours and the weight gain was measured. The characteristic of oxide grown on welded zone surface was examined by SEM/EDS, XRD, and XPS. Oxide was observed to grow on the fused metal surface suggesting the possibility of modifying the oxide chemistry under high temperature environment. It was found that the oxidation behavior of fused metal affected by the nature of their oxide growth and morphology, was influenced by their welding process and the difference in the chemical composition.

With the increasing demand for safety, energy saving and emission reduction, Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS) have become very attractive steels for automobile makers. The usage of AHSS steels is projected to grow significantly in the next 5–10 years with new safety and fuel economy regulations. These new steels have significant manufacturing challenges, particularly for welding and stamping. Welding of AHSS remains one of the technical challenges in the successful application of AHSS in automobile structures due to Heat affected Zones (HAZ) at the weld joint. In this study Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) of a lap joint configuration consisting of 1.5 mm Electro Galvanized (EG) Transformation Induced Plasticity 780 (TRIP780) to itself was investigated. The objective of the study was to understand the wire feed rate and torch speed influence on lap joint strength. Design of Experiments (DOE) was conducted to understand the wire feed and torch speed influence on tensile strength. Based on the statistical analysis, wire feed rate and torch speed were significant factors on static tensile strength. Two way interaction effect between wire feed and torch speed was significant. Metallurgical properties of the lap joints were evaluated using optical microscopy. No significant drop in hardness at HAZ, however, significant hardening was observed at the base metal and weld fillet interface.

Welding of AHSS remains one of the technical challenges in the successful application of AHSS in automobile structures due to heat-affected zone (HAZ) at the weld joint. In this study Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) of a lap joint configuration consisting of 1.4 mm uncoated DP980 to itself was investigated. The objective of the study was to understand the wire feed rate and torch speed influence on lap joint tensile strength (static and fatigue). A two factor, two level, full factorial design of experiment (DOE) was conducted to understand the wire feed and torch speed influence on tensile and fatigue strength of the welded joints. In order to understand the curvature effect, a center point was also included in the experiment. Based on the statistical analysis, neither factor was significant on static tensile strength, however, a two way interaction between wire feed rate and torch speed was significant on static tensile strength. Metallurgical properties of the lap joints were evaluated using optical microscopy. A significant hardness drop of 40% was observed at the HAZ.

The objective of the study was to understand the wire feed rate (WFR) and torch (or robot) speed (TS) influence on lap joint tensile strength (static and fatigue). A two factor, two level, full factorial design of experiment (DOE) was conducted to understand the wire feed and torch speed influence on tensile and fatigue strength of the welded joints. In order to understand the curvature effect, center point was also considered in the experiment. Based on the statistical analysis both factors are significant on static tensile strength and two way interaction between wire feed rate and torch speed was also significant on static tensile strength. Wire feed rate was the common significant factor on all three fatigue load conditions (1200 lbf, 1500 lbf and 1900 lbf). Metallurgical properties of the lap joints were evaluated using optical microscopy. Significant hardness drop of 25% was observed at the HAZ. To understand the influence of weld parameters and weld geometry on mechanical properties, correlation analysis was conducted among weld heat input parameters, weld geometry and mechanical properties (both static and fatigue loads).

SS400/SUS304 steels lap joint was applied in various industries due to flexible andbeneficial properties of these dissimilar metals joint. Therefore, an investigation for optimization ofa gas metal arc welding (GMAW) for producing the dissimilar metal lap joint should be conductedfor advancing the manufacturing industries. This research applied GMAW with various currents andspeeds to weld SS400/SUS304 lap joint and studied the relationship between the parameters andresuted joint properties. The experiment showed that an increase in the wedling current and a decreasein the welding speed affected to increase the fracture strength, the displacement of the lap joint, andthe joint hardness due to high combination of the materials at the joint interface. The uncombinedmaterials at the carbon steel/weld metal interface had the different hardness and resulted to initiatethe crack that then was propergated until the joint was broken. The weld metal showed the formationof the finer and smaller dendrite structure with increasing the welding current and decreasing thewelding speed.
