For the wide adoption of soybean varieties, it is desirable, that they are Kunitz trypsin inhibitor (Kti) free and resistant to yellow mosaic disease (YMD). The soybean variety SL525 with YMD resistance was crossed with the YMD susceptible variety NRC101 with a null kti allele. The F<sub>5 </sub>progeny derived from the cross was screened with two simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers (satt409 and satt322) linked with the null kti allele and the YMD resistance, respectively, and one null kti allele-specific marker. The presence of both desirable traits was further confirmed with the phenotypic data which showed good correlation with the genotypic data. The yield potential of fourteen such identified genotypes having both desirable traits was either at par or superior to SL525, hence, represent improved versions of SL 525.

Background: Among the anti-nutritional factors present in soybean, kunitz trypsin inhibitor (Kti) serves as major anti-nutrient, retarding the activity of digestive proteases. Genetic removal of Kti allele to develop agronomically desirable genotypes with high nutritional value is major breeding objective in soybean. Methods: The present study was performed on a set of 125 F5 genotypes derived from cross of SL525 (Kti +ve) and NRC101 (null Kti) to investigate the outcomes of genetic removal of Kti allele on characters of economic importance. Results: Comparison of mean of null Kti and Kti +ve plants for various parameters showed that introgression of null Kti allele adversely affected germination and grain yield. Germination, days to maturity, grain yield, plant height and seed weight were positively correlated with trypsin inhibitor activity and days to flowering, oil and protein content and fatty acid were unaffected by the allele present. The utilisation of the identified null kti genotypes would reduce extra cost on heat treatment incurred during soy processing and also boost utilization of soybean for bio-fortification in wheat flour to make chapattis.

Newfoundland livestock farmers import all feed grain legumes. Our objective was to compare field pea (Pisum sativum L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] nodule formation, plant growth, grain and protein yield potential in Newfoundland. Two-year experimental mean pea yield was high (≈0.3 t grain ha–1), although lodging was severe. Vision soybean yielded around 400 kg grain protein ha–1 when seeds were inoculated, even with soil temperatures below 20°C. Despite reasonable yield potentials, agronomic adaptation problems mitigate against the local production of all common feed grain legumes in the near future.
