<p class="Pa15">Entre los fenómenos métricos, la dialefa ha experimentado una evolución desafortunada en la versifi­cación española desde el s. xiii hasta nuestros días, pasando de tener carácter de canon en la escansión del mester de clerecía a aparecer en una proporción de escaso valor en comparación con su fenómeno adverso, la sinalefa. Este trabajo atiende a dicha evolución y sus implicaciones preceptivas según se reflejan en el análisis de un corpus de 18471 versos.</p><p class="Pa15">Among the meter phenomena, <em>dialepha </em>(hiatus in between words) has evolved in an unsuccessful fash­ion ever since the 13th Century to nowadays, changing roles from being a scansion rule for the <em>Ministry of Clergy </em>poets to becoming an exception if compared to its opposite phenomenon, synalepha. This pa­per focuses on the said evolution and its normative implications according to its reflection in a corpus built on 18471 lines.</p>

Some Observations Regarding the Functioning of the Adverb dizque, an Element of Diachronic and Diatopic Discontinuity in Spanish. The adverb dizque lies at the core of a double discontinuity in the landscape of Spanish language. On the one hand, it marks a diachronic discontinuity, as its modal-epistemic and pragmatic values have developed significantly since the 13th century, when it was first registered in Old Spanish, with the evidential-reportative meaning that stems from its etymology. On the other hand, dizque is affected by a diatopic discontinuity, as it is becoming obsolete in the Iberian Peninsula, but is extremely productive in Hispanic American varieties. This paper traces the evolution of the modal and discursive values of dizque and observes its syntactic behaviour by means of a corpus analysis, concluding that, in today’s Hispanic American Spanish, this adverb has reinforced this position in the left periphery, either as a sentence modifier or as a constituent modifier, with clearly established syntactic peculiarities. In this study, we explore linguistic constructions of gender in US sports reportage concerning two related basketball altercations: the Pacers–Pistons NBA fight in 2004 and the Shock–Sparks WNBA fight in 2008. We use a combined corpus and qualitative textual analysis to investigate coverage from the days immediately following the fights and to compare that coverage to sports reportage more generally. Our analysis reveals key differences in narrative focus; for example, that NBA coverage is most interested in blame assignation in the isolated event, while WNBA coverage concerns gender and the league writ large. Such patterns, which are realised linguistically in both explicit and implicit ways, contribute to the ‘othering’ of women and women athletes in the increasingly important sports-media-commercial complex.
