A psoas abscess in pregnancy is a relatively uncommon condition with nonspecific signs and symptoms. It may lead to serious complications if not diagnosed and treated promptly. Although spinal tuberculosis affects nearly half of skeletal tuberculosis patients, psoas abscess develops in only 5% of spinal tuberculosis cases. A clinical history and examination are used to make a diagnosis, which is then confirmed by microbiology and radiological findings. Here is an interesting case report on psoas abscess in pregnancy managed by pigtail catheter insertion and drainage.

Uncommon Condition

Symptomatic cervical intervertebral disc calcification in children presents with characteristic signs and symptoms, and usually has a benign, self-limiting and predictable course. The radiological images of the spine likewise have typical appearances, with a recognisable pattern and following a predetermined course. A case report of this uncommon condition in an 8-year-old boy illustrates most of the clinical and radiological findings in this entity.

Dengue infection during pregnancy carries the risk of vertical transmission to the fetus and newborn. This is higher if the infection occurs late in pregnancy and the mother delivers at the height of viremia. In such a scenario, both mother and neonate are at risk of life-threatening complications. We present an interesting case of dengue infection in a preterm neonate managed at our unit.

Abstract We report the case of a 12 days old baby boy who presented with swelling and bluish discoloration on his left hip at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in November 2018. Ultrasound (USS) was useful in making the diagnosis of a neonatal psoas abscess. He was treated with extraperitoneal drainage and with systemic antibiotics. The clinical presentation and diagnosis, treatment of this rare condition and brief literature review is given in this case report. We report a case of polyarticular septic arthritis with bilateral psoas abscesses. A 50-year-old woman was admitted with fever, multiple joint swelling and pain. She had a clinical history of acupuncture therapy for treatment of her chronic lower back pain two days before the appearance of her symptoms. Methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from blood culture, knee joint fluids and psoas abscess. After a long course of antibiotics for 70 days together with drainage of the abscess, the condition completely resolved. The acupuncture is the probable cause of the infection, and this case report reveals the importance of asking about a clinical history of acupuncture treatment and of making repeated bacterial examinations in undiagnosed polyarthritis patients.
