Research carried out in the years 2009–2011 and 2018–2019 sought to determine the magnitudes of fluxes of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) from the surfaces of three eutrophic reservoirs in SE Poland. The “static chamber” method was deployed at five or six stations located along the reservoirs, where the water column at its deepest slightly exceeds 2 m. Obtained values for the fluxes of CH4 varied across a wide (0–2513.48 mmol·m−2·d−1) range, with many of these values therefore exceeding those characteristics for large tropical reservoirs. The reservoirs studied were not found to differ significantly in terms of average CH4 flux, however. Where obtained values for CO2 fluxes in the range from −10.96 to 621.69 mmol·m−2·d−1 were concerned, most fell within the range given for temperate-zone reservoirs, while differences between reservoirs were noted for average values in this case.

Species composition, density, and temporal dynamics of zooplankton were studied in six reservoirs in a semi-arid region in tropical northeastern Brazil (Rio Grande do Norte state). All the reservoirs are highly eutrophic, with high contents of total nitrogen (minimum of 1200 µg.L-1) and total phosphorus (minimum of 10 µg.L-1), and extremely high algal biomass was registered (surpassing 20 µg Chl a.L-1). All the reservoirs showed an enduring condition of high turbidity and phytoplankton assemblages dominated by cyanobacteria. Zooplankton also showed quantitative patterns suggestive of eutrophic conditions, expressed by high densities, mainly in Passagem das Traíras and Sabugi reservoirs. A spatial differentiation in the composition of the zooplankton community was registered. Rotifers (especially Keratella tropica, Brachionus havanensis, and Keratella americana) were the dominant forms in the zooplankton community of Itans, Passagem das Traíras, and Sabugi reservoirs, while calanoid copepods (mainly Notodiaptomus cearensis) dominated in the Armando Ribeiro, Gargalheiras, and Parelhas systems. The existence of novel relationships in zooplankton community composition in eutrophic reservoirs in this tropical semi-arid region must be considered in designating zooplankton indicators of eutrophic conditions.

Abstract: Between the years 1970-2010, using the Carlson model criteria, the rate of eutrophication and trophic level of the largest dimictic lakes of Western Pomerania were studied. It was found that during the testing period, Lake Ińsko Duże was a mesotrophic reservoir, and Lakes Wądół, Będzin and Ińsko Małe were characterized by a highly advanced eutrophy. Lakes Woświn, Morzycko, Krzemień, Chłop Duży and Jelenin had borderline characteristics between being mesotrophic and eutrophic, while Lakes Narost, Chłop Mały and Wisala were typically eutrophic reservoirs. During the study, changes in the trophic level of Lakes Ińsko Duże and Morzycko and Woświn were noted. The first of the reservoirs listed had the best water quality in the second half of the 1990s, during which time the other two lakes had the worst water quality, taking into account the whole study period. Such changes were not observed in the other reservoirs examined.
