Abstract Experimental investigations on the properties of an instrument for in situ measurements of the radon exhalation rate revealed several unexpected results. The measurements were based on determining the growth of the activity in a measuring volume. Exhalation rates are often determined from the initial linear increase of the activity; this investigation, however, indicates that such a determination may not be reliable in the case of porous materials like gypsum and soil. The investigations also revealed that the results depend on a number of parameters such as temperature and aerosol conditions.
