To solve the problems on quick achieving reliability and the minimal path sets (MPS) of a system with GO Methodology, a Binary Decision Diagram (BDD) based new GO methodology algorithm is introduced. This technique can avoid the shared signals and combination explosion problems simultaneously. Detailed steps with a case study are presented to explain the analysis procedure of this technique, firstly, establish the GO model and transform it into a directed acyclic diagram (DAG), logic tree and BDD successively; then minimize the BDD according to the Without Rule; at last, this system reliability and MPS can be achieved. The results of the studied case verify the validity and effectiveness of this algorithm.

According to the gas explosion theory and the investigation of occurred gas explosion, the basic events that lead to coal mine gas explosion are summarized and the fault tree is worked out. Besides, the fault tree analysis is used for qualitative analysis. The minimal cuts sets, minimal path sets and structure importance are solved. Accordingly, the reasons of gas explosion are obtained, which can provide references for the prevention of coal mine gas explosion. The study showed that: the minimal cut sets of gas explosion is much(165) and the minimal path sets is small(4), and it is the major dangerous and harmful factors in coal mine. It that gas concentration must be strictly controlled and all sources of ignition should be eliminated is the basic and fundamental way to prevent mine gas explosion.

To find the best mode for system design in reliability optimization, risk engineers around the world use the importance measure as a basic tool. This paper introduces a new importance measure taking into account minimal path sets of the system. It helps to optimize the system designs that occur in many situations. For instance, this importance measure can be used (a) in identifying important components of any complex system and (b) solving constrained redundancy optimization problems. This is illustrated by providing two heuristic algorithms. In the first algorithm, this measure is used to find important components of any complex system ensuring improved system reliability. The second algorithm is used to solve a constrained redundancy optimization problem for any general coherent system giving (near) optimal solutions in 1-neighborhood. The results show that the new importance measure is easily applicable, unlike the classical ones. Hence, it serves as a very useful tool in measuring the important component(s) and solving constrained redundancy optimization problems of complex systems. Thus, it can be considered as a good alternative to the existing importance measures.
