These companies hired by larger, providing a diverse range of services in execution of infrastructure works. The construction industry is recognized by potential trigger significant environmental impacts by supporting, responsibility SME activities , and the main , which can also be made by SMEs. The environmental management systems (EMS ), which are intended to manage environmental aspects of activities, are still low compliance by the smaller companies . This research aims to identify the environmental aspects linked to the supply of services performed by SMEs providing services for civil construction in the country . This research applied exploratory subsidizes up by primary data and documentary study, in a qualitative approach. For knowledge and identification of environmental aspects associated with construction activities, they selected two infrastructure projects, road and port, as well as their service providers. In order to help break this stigma reserve of the use of EMS for small and medium enterprises, proposes a basic guide for the identification of environmental aspects, the technical and one of the most complex stage implementation of the EMS.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of competitive strategies on the performance of small and medium enterprises in Kenya.Methodology: The study employed a descriptive correlation design using primary data collected using questionnaires. The study targeted 4,560 SMEs in Nairobi CBD. The collected data was coded and entered into SPSS (V.20) to create a data sheet that was used for analysis. Data was analyzed using quantitative techniques. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the characteristics of collected data. Pearson’s Correlation, Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Multiple Regression Analysis were used to establish the relationships among the study variables.Findings: Cost leadership, differentiation, market focus and strategic alliance were all found to have a positive and significant influence on SME performance.Unique contribution to theory, practice and policy: The study recommended that: SMEs should embrace and invest in cost leadership strategies most especially forming linkages with service providers, suppliers and other supplementary institutions since it will enable them achieve competitive advantage; SMEs ought to focus and invest more on differentiation as it could be used as a major competitive advantage tool against competitors; SMEs should know on what basis to segment their products, services and operations; and that SMEs should embrace strategic alliances to increase their market share.

This study investigates stakeholder opinions of the major benefits and barriers of Environmental Management Systems (EMS) to the Nigerian construction industry, and the perceived issues to EMS adoption among organisations in the industry. The study highlights the environment as an important stakeholder in the industry because it affects and is affected by construction activities on a regular basis. It identifies the importance of ISO 14001 in ensuring adequate consideration for the environment is maintained on construction projects. The research adopts a quantitative approach by analysing responses from an online survey among construction industry professionals in Nigeria. The questions on the survey were drawn from a similar study carried out in Asia and the results were analysed using the Weighted Average and Standard Deviation statistical approach. Results reveal that the major benefits of EMS to the Nigerian construction industry were improved efficiency in waste management and environmental protection, as well as an overall increase in employee motivation due to better opportunities for training and development. Lack of technological support in organisations and the high cost of implementing EMS were viewed as the major barriers towards its uptake in construction companies. The findings also indicate that a feasible EMS implementation strategy must not ignore the unique nature of the Nigerian construction industry, which comprises mostly small and medium enterprises. The study concludes by recommending the use of a waste management plan based on the Reuse-reducerecycle-Recover model and an employee training plan to ensure continuous improvement in the organisation’s environmental management strategy.

Abstract Due to the ability to create and use technology, the human being has found various ways to transform the resources of the Earth in all sorts of new materials, equipment and energy sources. At least since the last industrial revolution until now, each generation has added more technology to the received legacy, but at the same time, left the planet in a far more degraded state than the inherited condition. Within these changes, small and medium enterprises (SME) in their capacity as pillars of the economic development of a nation, have been compelled to change their previous strategies. Implementing an Environmental Management Systems (EMS) can be seen as the only way to connect the activities of the organization to the environmental requirements, in a context in which the orientation of the demand towards environmental markets is becoming increasingly apparent.

The study investigated the direct effects of financial literacy (knowledge, skills, and attitudes) on financial preparedness for retirement and the moderating effect of age among the small and medium enterprises in Uganda. Primary data was collected from a sample of n = 380 selected from the SME workforce. Descriptive analysis was run on SPSS, while validity and reliability of the measurement items yielded satisfactory composite reliability scores and average variance explained (AVE) scores for all items. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to test the hypotheses and multi-group analysis conducted to test for the moderating effect of age on the relationship between financial literacy and retirement preparedness. The results revealed that knowledge and skills were significant predictors of retirement preparedness. However, ‘attitude' was not a significant predictor, and age had no moderating effect on the relationship between the study variables. These findings present practical implications for policymakers and financial educators in a developing country context.

In this study, we explore the research published from 2015 to 2020 on the importance of family firms (FFs) to sustainability. Our results come from a content analysis of 28 studies on this topic. Further, they deal with small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the construction industry in Italy and Spain. These studies mainly follow a quantitative approach with data from a survey. This study’s main contribution regards the identification of three sorts of aspects associated to sustainability in FFs which match the three pillars of the triple bottom line approach that supports sustainable business development: social inclusion, economic development, and environmental protection. Our findings show that the family’s religiosity, reputation, and image play relevant roles in the FFs’ adoption of sustainable practices. Moreover, the CEO and their successor’s choices also have consequences for sustainability. These studies demonstrate how the family’s control, its values, and the industry influence the adoption of corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices. FFs go green by adopting eco-innovation to adapt to the constantly changing environment and market pressures. We acknowledge the limitations of the study. We offer advice to colleagues when developing future futures studies to address the influence of cultural differences between FFs and non-FFs and suggest they perform comparative analyses. This research could lead to further investigation of the effects of other variables that may influence sustainability in the context of FFs.
