This study aims to examine the effect of tax avoidance, corporate social responsibility disclosures, and risk disclosures on investment efficiency. This study also examines the role of corporate governance in the association between tax avoidance, corporate social responsibility disclosures, risk disclosures, and investment efficiency. This study uses multiple linear regression with panel data. The sample uses 43 manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesian Securities Exchange from 2014 up to 2017 so that the total sample in this study amounted to 172 firm-years. The result suggests that tax avoidance is negatively associated with investment efficiency. However, corporate social responsibility disclosures and risk disclosures do not affect investment efficiency. Furthermore, another result suggests that corporate governance failed to moderate the effect of tax avoidance on investment efficiency. Besides, corporate governance can weaken the negative influence of corporate social responsibility disclosures on investment efficiency as well as corporate governance drives the negative effect of risk disclosures on investment efficiency.

Corporate social responsibility and corporate performance perspectives have been focal area of interest for the researchers; and as such; it has been well explored in the literature in the recent decade (Saeidi et al., 2014). Owing to the contradictory results reported by the earlier literature; Ansong and Agyemang (2017) concluded that the reason for the conflicting results is the ignorance of some relevent mediating variables. Blasi et al. (2018) stated that the association of CSR and corporate performance is still unconcluded. As a first attempt Bitar and Belnemlih (2016) captured any possible association between CSR and investment efficiency. Moreover, CSR and Financial distress have been explored in isolation. So, there is a need to explore the relationship of CSR with Financial Distress and Financial Performance by taking into consideration the mediating role of Information Asymmetry, Agency Cost and Investment Inefficiency.

Prior evidence that firm’s investment behavior is positively affected by its corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosure, as one of the key CSR areas of the company, leaves unaddressed whether all kinds of disclosure have the same effect. Drawing on stakeholder theory, this study analyzes the issue in a more exhaustive way. A cross-sectional logistic regression model is used to test the hypothesized association, and the results imply that firms’ high (low)-quality disclosure regarding their engagement in CSR activities increases their chances of being from the investment-efficient (inefficient) group. The obtained results conclude that CSR reporting activity is not beneficial for companies unless a meaningful disclosure of sustainability information is made. Our results are robust to using alternative proxies for CSR disclosure quality. This study contributes to the scarce evidence on CSR reporting in Pakistan and provides a useful method for assessing quality of CSR reports.
