Whereas the so-called ‘citizenship premium’ in the labour market has been widely studied, we know little about how naturalisation affects immigrants’ lives beyond work and income. Focusing on the Netherlands, this paper analyses the relationship between citizenship acquisition and immigrant residential mobility, in particular the propensity of immigrants to move away from areas with high concentrations of migrants. We draw on register data from Statistics Netherlands ( N = 234,912). We argue that possessing Dutch citizenship reduces spatial stratification by diminishing the risk of housing market discrimination, thereby facilitating mobility outside of migrant-concentrated areas. Our findings show that naturalised immigrants are 50% more likely to move out of concentrated neighbourhoods, all else constant. The effect of naturalisation is especially relevant for renting without housing benefits and for home ownership, and for mid-risk immigrants who earn around the median income and hold permanent jobs, whose applications face strong scrutiny from landlords, rental agencies and mortgage lenders.

SUMMARYThis study was performed to investigate space–time patterns ofCampylobacterspp. colonization in broiler flocks in Norway. Data on theCampylobacterspp. status at the time of slaughter of 16 054 broiler flocks from 580 farms between 2002 and 2006 was included in the study. Spatial relative risk maps together with maps of space–time clustering were generated, the latter by using spatial scan statistics. These maps identified the same areas almost every year where there was a higher risk for a broiler flock to test positive forCampylobacterspp. during the summer months. A modifiedK-function analysis showed significant clustering at distances between 2·5 and 4 km within different years. The identification of geographical areas with higher risk forCampylobacterspp. colonization in broilers indicates that there are risk factors associated withCampylobacterspp. colonization in broiler flocks varying with region and time, e.g. climate, landscape or geography. These need to be further explored. The results also showed clustering at shorter distances indicating that there are risk factors forCampylobacterspp. acting in a more narrow scale as well.

There has been substantial discussion among planners about the influence of transport in residential location choices. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the importance of accessibility in explaining residential location choices. The paper addresses this issue by presenting and analyzing findings from the literature and results of a housing market estimation study in the Netherlands. The research findings for the Netherlands illustrate that the transport system influences residential moves at three stages: in move–stay choice, estimation results show that households are less likely to move away from a more accessible location; travel time variables are significant for all household types, and therefore changes in the transport system will affect the size of the housing market and search area of the households; the model estimation results suggest that accessibility of a specific location for many household types is not a significant variable in their location choice. Overall, the empirical results suggest that the role of accessibility is significant but small compared with the effect of demographic factors, neighborhood amenities, and dwelling attributes in explaining residential location choices. The empirical findings are confirmed by findings in the literature; the present results are located at the lower end of findings reported in the literature. An important factor contributing to this result is that accessibility changes among regions in the Netherlands are rather small.
