In the Rayleigh–Gans–Debye approximation an analytical solution is obtained for the problem of second harmonic generation by a plane electromagnetic wave with elliptical polarization from a thin optically nonlinear layer on the surface of a cylindrical dielectric particle of finite size placed in a dielectric. The result is presented in tensor and vector forms in general case, in which the nonlinear dielectric susceptibility tensor has four independent components (one chiral and three non-chiral). For the first time it is shown that at generation from the end plane surfaces of a cylindrical particle the contribution of chiral components differs in phase from that of non-chiral components. It is also found that for small linear dimensions of the cylindrical particle (height and radius of the base), the radiation due to the chiral component of the second-order nonlinear dielectric susceptibility tensor makes a dominant contribution to the second harmonic generation from a non-linear cylindrical layer (end and side surfaces).

AbstractThe paper overviews our recent work on the synthesis of metasurfaces and related concepts and applications. The synthesis is based on generalized sheet transition conditions (GSTCs) with a bianisotropic surface susceptibility tensor model of the metasurface structure. We first place metasurfaces in a proper historical context and describe the GSTC technique with some fundamental susceptibility tensor considerations. On this basis, we next provide an in-depth development of our susceptibility-GSTC synthesis technique. Finally, we present five recent metasurface concepts and applications, which cover the topics of birefringent transformations, bianisotropic refraction, light emission enhancement, remote spatial processing, and nonlinear second-harmonic generation.

Intense second harmonic generation emission was observed from a single nanofiber, corresponding to an effective 2nd order susceptibility of 80 pm V−1, 4 times greater than the largest 2nd order susceptibility tensor element (21 pm V−1) for a macroscopic 3NA crystal.

The solution is analyzed for the problem of the second harmonic generation by a plane electromagnetic wave with elliptical polarization from a thin optically nonlinear layer on the surface of a cylindrical particle of finite size. A graphical analysis of the solution is carried out by constructing three-dimensional radiation patterns characterizing the spatial distribution of the second-harmonic radiation power and its polarization. It is found that for small radii of the base of the cylindrical particle, each anisotropy coefficient corresponds to its own individual shape of the radiation pattern. Increasing the height of the cylindrical particle leads to flattening of the radiation pattern. More than 20 mathematical properties of the solution are found, which characterize symmetries of the second harmonic field distribution. Individual properties are illustrated in radiation patterns.
