AbstractThe advantages of using the method of laser coloration for investigation of specific features of filamentation in homogeneous transparent dielectrics are described. The results of several experiments conducted with a lithium fluoride crystal by this method are presented. The possibility is shown of obtaining data on the structure of the light field in a filament formed by a single laser pulse and processing them at a substantially later time after the experiment, which is not available by using other methods, allowed observing a plasma-free regime of filamentation, detecting single-cycle light bullets, and demonstrating their robustness.

A commercial mode locked cavity dumped Nd:YAG dye laser operating at 10 Hz repetition rate is modified to produce a high contrast (>5000:1) single laser pulse while maintaining the energy stability and high beam quality. A trigger generator biases the cavity dumping photodiode, which is triggered externally by a pulse from the microprocessor-based control unit controlling a ∼2 J/200 ps laser chain. In the laser chain, the high contrast (>5000:1) is achieved by an external pulse selector based on single Pockel's cell to select a single laser pulse of high contrast, which is a prerequisite for experimental study of the equation of state. Laser-induced shock velocity measurement in thin aluminum, gold on aluminum, and copper on aluminum foil targets using this modified laser system are also presented. The equation of state of Al, Au, and Cu obtained using an impedance matching technique are in agreement with the reported results of SESAME and simulation results.

AbstractAmorphous 55wt%Cr-45wt%Ni films (60 nm thick) supported on EM copper grids were irradiated in air at normal incidence with a ruby laser (λ∼, 0.694 μm) through a ≈ 1.5 mm diameter diaphragm using one single laser pulse of 60 ns (FWHM) with fluences ranging from 120 to 540 J.m−2. The structure of the irradiated films is studied by TEM and TED. As a rule due to the appearance of thermal gradients between the centre and the mesh edge of the EM grid, the crystallization took place under various conditions of reaction from liquid phase, liquid melted layers , activated diffusion in solid state, to under threshold conditions for the development of the crystalline nuclei in the amorphous matrix. Periodic resonant and unreso-nant structures also developed in the liquid melted layers.
