Hemibrycon is a group of freshwater characid fish species first recognized by Günther (1864) as a subgenus of Tetragonopterus, and now included in the subfamily Stevardiinae. There are 21 speciesrecorded from the rivers of Colombia, but only one species, H.santamartae, has been reported previously in drainages of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. Hemibrycon sierraensis n. sp. is described fromthe Río Gaira, Caribbean coastal drainage. It is distinguished from all congeners by having in life a bright red adipose fin (vs. hyaline or transparent)that turns dark brown in specimens preserved in alcohol. It differs from Hemibrycon beni, H. boquiae, H. brevispini, H. colombianus, H. mikrostiktos, H. metae, H. microformaa, H. palomae and H. rafaelense in having a vertically elongate humeral spot that extends 3-4 longitudinal scale series below the lateral line. It differs from H. divisorensis, H. pautensis and H. santamartae by having the last dorsal-fin ray unbranched; and from H. pautensis by the number of scale series between the lateralline and the pelvic-fin insertions. It differs from H. divisorensis in the number of unbranched anal-fin rays, and the number of teeth on the dentary and maxilla. It differs from H. santamartae in the number of supraneurals, caudal peduncle depth, head length and orbital diameter.

A new Tyttocharax species from the Güejar River system, near the Macarena Mountains in Colombia is described. This is the first record for the genus from the Orinoco basin. The combination of the following characters distinguish Tyttocharax metae from its congeners: presence of bony hooks on the pectoral and caudal-fin rays; bony hooks on the anal-fin rays larger than those on the pelvic-fin rays; pectoral-fin rays i,5-6,i; presence of three unbranched dorsal-fin rays; absence of an adipose fin; four scales rows between the anal-fin origin and the lateral line; and four scale rows between the pelvic-fin and the lateral line. Ecological characteristics of the habitat of the new species are also presented.

Microglanis carlae, new species, is described from the río Paraguay basin and distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: paired and anal fins mottled or with thin faint bands, trunk with dark-brown saddles, anterior margin of pectoral spine with serrations retrorse proximally and antrorse distally, tip of pectoral spine as a distinct bony point, continuous portion of lateral line reaching vertical through last dorsal-fin ray, caudal peduncle with irregularly shaped, faint to dark blotch, maxillary barbel surpassing vertical through dorsal-spine origin, and dark bar on posterior flank continuous from base of adipose fin to that of anal fin. The new species is included in the Microglanis parahybae species complex on the basis of color pattern.

Salmo tigridis, new species, from the Tigris River drainage, Turkey, is distinguished from the other species of Salmo in Turkey and adjacent basins by having a greater number of scale rows between the end of the adipose-fin base and lateral line (19–20, vs. 12–17); a greater number of scale rows between dorsal-fin origin and lateral line (32–35, vs. 23–32); and a deeper and stouter caudal peduncle (its depth 11.5–12.6 % SL, vs. 9.3–11.5, except in S. cf. macrostigma).

Nandus prolixus sp. nov. is described from the Sepilok River drainage in Sabah, northeastern Borneo. This species is distinguished from its only Sundaic southeastern Asian congener, N. nebulosus, in having a longer, more produced snout (25.7–30.6% HL vs. 18.5–26.1), more lateralline scales (33–37 vs. 24–34), more scales below the lateral line (12 vs. 10–11), fewer spines in the dorsal fin (XIV vs. XV–XVI), and fewer pectoral-fin rays (15–16 vs. 17–19). It differs from N. nandus (from India) in having fewer lateral-line scales (33–37 vs. 42–55), fewer scales above the lateral line (4–5 vs. 6–7), fewer scales below the lateral line (12 vs. 14–18), more dorsal spines (XIV vs. XII–XIII), and the absence (vs. presence) of a distinct dark spot at the base of the caudal peduncle. It differs from N. oxyrhynchus (from mainland southeastern Asia) in having a more slender body (body depth 37.6–40.5% SL vs. 41.3–44.1) and a less steeply sloping predorsal profile.

A new species of Gephyrocharax is described from the río Cascajales basin, a tributary of the río La Colorada, río Magdalena system, Colombia. The new species is distinguished from its congeners, exceptG. melanocheir, by the absence of an adipose fin in most specimens and by the possession of a lateral branched pectoral-fin ray in males with a distal fan-shaped structure with minute bony hooks and a dark blotch or a few scattered dark brown chromatophores along its branches. The new species differs from G.melanocheir by the absence of an intense black pigmentation at the base of the anterior five dorsal-fin rays, the number of vertebrae (40-41vs. 38-39), the frontals contacting each other anterior to the epiphyseal bar in adults (vs. the absence of contact), the posterior margin of the mesethmoid straight in its central portion (vs. strongly concave at this point), the pouch scale of mature males reaching caudal-fin ray 11 or the area between caudal-fin rays 11 and 12 (vs. reaching only to caudal-fin ray 10 or the area between caudal-fin rays 9 and 10), the number of minute terminal branches of the lateral branched pectoral-fin ray of mature males (60-88 vs. 28-54), a longer black lateral stripe along the body in males (reaching to the base of the caudal-fin rays vs. reaching the middle of the length of the caudal peduncle), and the snout length (28.3-31.8% HLvs. 22.2-28.0% HL). The diagnosis ofGephyrocharax is modified to include species with the adipose fin variably present

A new cyprinid fish, Metzia bounthobi, is described on the basis of 18 specimens (including 10 specimens in type series)from the Mekong River basin in Phongsaly and Luang Prabang Provinces, northern Laos. The species is distinguishedfrom congeners by having the following diagnostic traits: 18–20 branched anal-fin rays (vs. 10–18 in the others); 49–55lateral-line scale rows (vs. 35–48); 33–36 predorsal scale rows (vs. 15–20); 20–22 circumpeduncular scale rows (vs.14–18); 8–10 gill rakers on outer surface of first gill arch (vs. 12–18). The new species also resembles species of Hemic-ulterella, Ischikauia and at least some species of Anabarilius, in sharing a sharp keel developed only between the base ofthe pelvic fin and anus, soft last unbranched dorsal-fin ray, and air bladder composed of two chambers; however, M.bounthobi differs in having a considerably rounded snout (vs. pointed in Hemiculterella, Ischikauia and Anabarilius),18–20 branched anal-fin rays (vs. 8–17 in Hemiculterella, Ischiakuia and Anabarilius), 49–55 lateral-line scale rows (vs.more than 58 in Ischikauia and Anabarilius, except for A. transmontana with 54–57), air bladder with rounded posteriorend (vs. posterior end with a small lobe at least in Hemiculterella) and 39–40 vertebrae (vs. 40–43, 42–43 and 43–48 in Hemiculterella, Ischikauia and Anabarilius, respectively).

The Pseudochromis reticulatus complex is diagnosed to include species of Pseudochromis with the combination of a pointed caudal fin (rounded with middle rays produced), a reticulated colour pattern on the upper part of the body, dorsal-fin rays modally III,26, anal-fin rays modally III,15, and pectoral-fin rays modally 18. Members of the complex include P. reticulatus Gill & Woodland, P. pictus Gill & Randall, P. tonozukai Gill & Allen, P. jace Allen, Gill & Erdmann and P. stellatus new species. The last-named is herein described from six specimens from Batanta and Batu Hitam in the Raja Ampat Islands, West Papua, Indonesia. It is distinguished from other members of the complex in live coloration, and in having higher mean numbers of scales in lateral series and of anterior lateral-line scales (36–38 and 29–32, respectively), and a deeper body as measured from the dorsal-fin origin to pelvic-fin origin (31.8–33.5 % SL).

A new species of Trimma is described from the islands just off the Thailand coast near Phuket. Trimma ukkriti n.sp. lacks scales on the cheek and opercle, but has ctenoid scales in the midline of the nape, has an elongate second spine of the first dorsal fin which reaches posteriorly to between the base of the spine and the base of the 4th ray of the second dorsal fin when adpressed, 19–20 pectoral-fin rays with 6–13 branched rays in the middle of the fin, an unbranched 5th pelvic-fin ray, which is 48–67% the length of the 4th ray, a U-shaped interorbital trench with no fleshy median ridge, a poorly developed postorbital trench ending at the 5th papilla in row p (which has 6 papillae in total), and row c beneath the eye consists of 6 papillae. When live and freshly collected, the species is very similar in appearance to T. okinawae and T. readerae, with orange to red spots on the head and body.

A new characid species, Hemibrycon divisorensis, is described from the río Ucayali drainage, Loreto, Peru. The new species is distinguished from all Hemibrycon species by the presence of a wide black asymmetrical spot covering base of caudal-fin rays and extending along entire length of caudal-fin rays 9 to 12-13 (except from H. surinamensis), and a black band in the lower half of the caudal peduncle extending from the region above the last anal-fin rays to the caudal-fin base. Furthermore, it is distinguished from most species of the genus by the number of scale rows below the lateral line (4-5 vs 5-9), except H. jabonero, H. microformaa, H. orcesi, and H. surinamensis. It differs from these species by scale and fin ray counts and color pattern. The lack of a supraorbital in Hemibrycon species is discussed and confirmed.

ABSTRACT A new species of Astyanax from tributaries of the rio de Contas, Bahia, Brazil, is described. The new species differs from congeners by having three horizontal series of scales from lateral line to pelvic-fin origin and the distal margin of third infraorbital distinctly separated from vertical and horizontal limbs of preopercle, leaving a broad area not covered by superficial bones. The new species further differs from most congeners by the presence of bony hooks on all fins of mature males. Particularly from congeners occurring in rivers of the Northeastern Mata Atlântica freshwater ecoregion, it further differs by having the highest body depth just anterior to the dorsal-fin origin, 34-37 pored lateral line scales, a vertically elongated conspicuous dark humeral blotch reaching below the lateral line and a conspicuous dark wide midlateral stripe extending from the clear area on the rear of the humeral blotch to the end of middle caudal-fin rays and forming an inconspicuous blotch on caudal peduncle.
