The spore mass of Ustilago aegilopsidis is blackish brown; the spores germinate with the production of four primary sporidia on the promycelium, and infection of the host occurs through the coleoptiles of very young seedlings. Two collections of the fungus were pathogenic on Aegilops bicornis and Aegilops caudata, and one collection was also pathogenic on Aegilops cylindrica, but neither collection was pathogenic on 18 other Aegilops spp., eight Triticum spp., or two Hordeum spp. Experimental hybridization of the fungus with two smuts of barley, Ustilago nigra and Ustilago hordei, showed that U. aegilopsidis is very closely related to these fungi, and possibly conspecific with U. nigra.
