AbstractObjective:We report lateral sinus thrombosis occurring as a rare complication following a routine and uneventful otological procedure.Case report:Lateral sinus thrombosis is a rare but known complication of otitis media. It has not been documented as a complication of routine otological surgery. We present a case of this rare complication following a myringoplasty. We also discuss the presentation, investigation and treatment of lateral sinus thrombosis. It is essential to be able to recognise and treat this rare complication early, due to its high mortality rate. Conclusion:Lateral sinus thrombosis is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication. It is therefore essential for clinicians to be able to recognise and treat this condition early.

The availability of effective antibiotic therapy has tremendously reduced the incidence of otogenic lateral sinus thrombosis (OLST) and changed its clinical presentation to a subtle one. The nature of predisposing otogenic disease has also changed from acute otitis media to chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM). The prevalence of CSOM is still high in low-income economies. With such a high prevalence of CSOM, a good clinical acumen is required to identify and manage OLST. We present a case of chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) complicated by OLST.

AbstractA case of bilateral mastoiditis with subperiosteal abscesses complicating acute otitis media in a two and a half year old girl is presented. Contrast enhanced computerized tomography confirmed the diagnosis of right lateral sinus thrombosis. The aetiology, diagnosis and management of these conditions are discussed.
