We develop the dimension theory for a class of linear solenoids, which have a "fractal" attractor. We will find the dimension of the attractor, proof formulas for the dimension of ergodic measures on this attractor and discuss the question of whether there exists a measure of full dimension.

We studied topological and metric properties of the so-called interval translation maps (ITMs). For these maps, we introduced the maximal invariant measure and demonstrated that an ITM, endowed with such a measure, is metrically conjugated to an interval exchange map (IEM). This allowed us to extend some properties of IEMs (e.g., an estimate of the number of ergodic measures and the minimality of the symbolic model) to ITMs. Further, we proved a version of the closing lemma and studied how the invariant measures depend on the parameters of the system. These results were illustrated by a simple example or a risk management model where interval translation maps appear naturally.

Abstract The papers [O. M. Sarig. Symbolic dynamics for surface diffeomorphisms with positive entropy. J. Amer. Math. Soc.26(2) (2013), 341–426] and [S. Ben Ovadia. Symbolic dynamics for non-uniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms of compact smooth manifolds. J. Mod. Dyn.13 (2018), 43–113] constructed symbolic dynamics for the restriction of $C^r$ diffeomorphisms to a set $M'$ with full measure for all sufficiently hyperbolic ergodic invariant probability measures, but the set $M'$ was not identified there. We improve the construction in a way that enables $M'$ to be identified explicitly. One application is the coding of infinite conservative measures on the homoclinic classes of Rodriguez-Hertz et al. [Uniqueness of SRB measures for transitive diffeomorphisms on surfaces. Comm. Math. Phys.306(1) (2011), 35–49].

AbstractWe introduce a functor which associates to every measure-preserving system (X,ℬ,μ,T) a topological system $(C_2(\mu ),\tilde {T})$ defined on the space of twofold couplings of μ, called the topological lens of T. We show that often the topological lens ‘magnifies’ the basic measure dynamical properties of T in terms of the corresponding topological properties of $\tilde {T}$. Some of our main results are as follows: (i) T is weakly mixing if and only if $\tilde {T}$ is topologically transitive (if and only if it is topologically weakly mixing); (ii) T has zero entropy if and only if $\tilde {T}$ has zero topological entropy, and T has positive entropy if and only if $\tilde {T}$ has infinite topological entropy; (iii) for T a K-system, the topological lens is a P-system (i.e. it is topologically transitive and the set of periodic points is dense; such systems are also called chaotic in the sense of Devaney).

SummaryAs the build-up of Operation Granby forces developed in the Gulf, casualty estimates indicated the need for a 100-bed hospital facility to care for the possible maritime casualties. RF A Argus, the Air Training Ship, was identified as the potential Primary Casualty Reception Ship (PCRS) and at the end of September 1990 plans were drawn up to convert the forward hangar into a two-storey 100-bed hospital in collective protection (COLPRO).In the three weeks prior to deployment, the hospital was designed, built, equipped and staffed.Argus arrived in the Gulf in mid-November as the PCRS with, all in COLPRO, a 10-bed intensive care unit (ICU), a 14-bed high dependency unit (HDU), a 76-bed low dependency unit (LDU) plus four operating tables in two theatres with full support services.The hospital was staffed by a medical team of 136 personnel and supported by the Air department with four casualty evacuation helicopters, an RN Party and the staff of the RFA.One hundred and five patients were treated of which 78 were returned to duty. Argus as PCRS spent longer in the northern Persian Gulf than any other ship, UK or US.
