The soft-spheres model of nuclear reaction cross sections incorporating tapered density distributions is used to evaluate nucleon mean free paths and transparencies at intermediate energies. Comparison with similar calculations employing uniform density distributions shows the latter to give misleading results that nevertheless have been used in recent years as evidence that the physics of the nucleon–nucleon interaction within nuclei is incompletely understood.

The structure of 16-26 O is investigated within the relativistic mean field (RMF) as well as high-energy nuclear collisions. The reaction cross-sections of 16-24 O +12 C around 1 GeV are calculated within the multiple scattering theory, where the multiple integrals are evaluated by Monte Carlo method as well as by the optical limit approximation of the Glauber model. In-medium effects are investigated within the optical limit, where it is found to be important in order to get reliable information about nuclear radii and density distributions. The reaction cross-sections indicate to a halo structure for 23 O . This neutron halo is also found in the rms matter radii and nuclear densities especially when Fermi shape is used in the optical limit, including in-medium effects, in extracting the parameters of the density distributions from the experimental reaction cross-sections.

Calculations of the 6,8 He +28 Si total reaction cross-sections at intermediate energies are performed on the basis of the Glauber–Sitenko microscopic optical-limit model. The target-nucleus density distribution is taken from the electron-nucleus scattering data, and the 6,8 He densities are used as they are derived in different models. The results of the calculations are compared with existing experimental data. The effects of the density tails of the projectile nuclei as well as the role of shell admixtures and short-range correlations are analyzed.

Reaction cross sections for 11 Be and 8 B on proton targets at 40A - 120A MeV have been measured by the transmission method. With these data, we can discuss the proton- and neutron- density distributions at the nuclear surface independently in principle using the Glauber theory. Our experimental results support that the constituent of halo in 11 Be is neutron dominantly and that of 8 B is proton dominantly.

The surface of neutron-rich heavy nuclei, with a neutron skin created by excess neutrons, provides an important terrestrial model system to study dilute neutron-rich matter. By using quasi-free α cluster–knockout reactions, we obtained direct experimental evidence for the formation of α clusters at the surface of neutron-rich tin isotopes. The observed monotonous decrease of the reaction cross sections with increasing mass number, in excellent agreement with the theoretical prediction, implies a tight interplay between α-cluster formation and the neutron skin. This result, in turn, calls for a revision of the correlation between the neutron-skin thickness and the density dependence of the symmetry energy, which is essential for understanding neutron stars. Our result also provides a natural explanation for the origin of α particles in α decay.

We investigated the reaction dynamics induced by the 7Be,8B+208Pb collisions at energies around the Coulomb barrier. Charged particles originated by both the col- lisions were detected by means of 6 ΔE-Eres telescopes of a newly developed detector array. Experimental data were analysed within the framework of the Optical Model and the total reaction cross-sections were compared together and with the 6,7Li+208Pb colli-sion data. According to the preliminary results, 7Be nucleus reactivity is rather similar to the 7Li one whereas the 8B+208Pb total reaction cross section appears to be much larger than those measured for reactions induced by the other weakly-bound projectiles on the same target.
