New findings of organismal dispersal by other organisms can help explain the distribution of species to remote places. In this work, I describe a male and a female of a new water mite species of the genus Arrenurus that were found in the crop of an Anas flavirostris duck near Cochabamba, Bolivia. Both specimens were complete; however, it is unknown if they were alive and, thus, potentially viable at the time of collection. This study also represents the first reported finding of water mites in a bird crop.

Two water mite species (Acari: Hydrachnidia) are reported from Montenegro (Yugoslavia, SE Europe). Stygohydracarus karanovici is described as a new species and Atractides inflatipes Lundblad, 1956 as the first record from the Balkan peninsula. The latter is a rare water mite species previously known only from the French Pyrenees.

A survey is given of the distribution of the water mite species of the genus Sperchon Kramer (Acari: Hydrachnidia: Sperchontidae) in Turkey, based on all published data and numerous new records. Sperchon (Hispidosperchon) oezkani and S. (Sperchon) ayyildizi are described as new species; Sperchon fundamentalis Bader & Sepasgozarian, 1980 is synonymized with S. glandulosus Koenike, 1886; the first record from Turkey is given for Sperchon (Hispidosperchon) tarnogradskii Sokolow, 1927.

Considering the geographical location of China, a very rich fauna of water mites should be expected. Previously, seventeen families have been reported from China (Jin, 1997; Smit, 2002; Guo & Jin, 2005): Eylaidae Leach, 1815, Limnocharidae Grube, 1859, Hydryphantidae Piersig, 1896, Hydrodromidae Viets, 1936, Hydrachnidae Leach, 1815, Sperchontidae Thor, 1900, Lebertiidae Thor, 1900, Oxidae Viets, 1926, Teutoniidae Koenike, 1910, Limnesiidae Thor, 1900, Hygrobatidae Koch, 1842, Unionicolidae Oudemans, 1909, Pionidae Thor, 1900, Mideopsidae Koenike, 1910, Arrenuridae Thor, 1900 and Pontarachnidae Koenike, 1910. The species described in this paper belongs to the subgenus Dartia Soar, 1917 in the genus Nilotonia Thor, 1905 of the family Anisitsiellidae Koenike, 1910, which increases the number of known water mite families in the Chinese fauna to eighteen.

This survey of the distribution of the water mite species (Acari: Hydrachnidia, Hygrobatidae) of the genus Atractides Koch in Iran is based on all published data so far and numerous new records. Five new species are described, viz. Atractides markaziensis Pesic, A. mossahebii Pesic, A. mirkopesici Pesic, A. gereckei Pesic, and A. nikooae Pesic; a first description is given for the male of Atractides cf. lunipes Lundblad, 1956; a redescription are given for Atractides baderi Schwoerbel & Sepasgozarian, 1976, Atractides nahavandii Schwoerbel & Sepasgozarian, 1976, and Atractides fluviatilis (Szalay, 1929); first records from Iran are given for Atractides acutirostris (Motas & C.Angelier, 1927), A. robustus (Sokolow, 1940) and A. inflatus (Walter, 1925).

Four new water mite species of the genus Hygrobates, subgenus Lurchibates (Acari, Hydrachnidia, Hygrobatidae) are described. Hygrobates (Lurchibates) macrochela sp. nov. Goldschmidt, Nishikawa & Shimano is described in male and female; Hygrobates (Lurchibates) malosimilis sp. nov. Goldschmidt, Nishikawa & Shimano is described in male, both new water mite species were collected from newts of the species Pachytriton inexpectatus Nishikawa, Jiang, Matsui & Mo, 2011; Hygrobates (Lurchibates) incognitus sp. nov. Goldschmidt, Nishikawa & Shimano is described in female collected from newts of the species Paramesotriton guangxiensis (Huang, Tang and Tang, 1983); Hygrobates (Lurchibates) fragmentarius sp. nov. Goldschmidt, Nishikawa & Shimano is described in a single severely fragmented specimen (sex could not be determined) collected from a newt of the species Paramesotriton yunwuensis Wu, Jiang, and Hanken, 2010. Principal differences between the subgenus Lurchibates and the nominal subgenus Hygrobates s. str. are illustrated and discussed as well as the sexual dimorphism of Lurchibates. Morphometric analyses confirmed the morphological differences of ten out of the eleven so far described species (H. (L.) fragmentarius could not be included in the analysis); two morphological groups became evident mainly based upon the shape of the anterior coxae. These analyses as well provide an idea of possible phylogenetic relationships among the species. A key to all currently known species of the subgenus Lurchibates is given. So far the subgenus is restricted to SE-Asia, a map showing the distribution of all species is presented.

New records of six water mite species (Acari: Hydrachnidia) from interstitial waters of India are reported; three of them, viz. Atractides panesari, Albaxona indica and Axonopsis periyar are described as new to science. Atractides gracilis Jin, 1997 is replaced with Atractides jini nom. nov. Moreover, an additional description of the female of Atractides biscutatus Cook, 1967 is given.

Dockovdia oruensis sp. nov., from the mantle cavity of the prosobranch gastropod Potadoma moerchi (Reeve) in Nigeria is described and figured. This is the second water mite species from the Hygrobatidae to be reported as a ‘parasite’ of a freshwater mollusc and, significantly, the first record of a water mite from a thiarid gastropod.
