Cultural heritage conservation and restoration work is a complex process that includes documentation, data collection, interpretation and production. By integrating the BIM (Building Information Modeling) methodology into this process, the concept of HBIM (Historic Building Information Modeling) has been formed. In this article, the progress of this process with the HBIM methodology in the restoration, protection and management studies of cultural heritage buildings and sites requiring collective and holistic work, the evaluation of access to the information obtained, and the provision of interdisciplinary information exchange were analyzed. By using the SWOT analysis method, the opportunities and threats offered by using the HBIM working methodology were evaluated and the strengths and weaknesses of the HBIM technology were determined. As a result of the SWOT analysis, it has been determined that the HBIM application will positively contribute to the heritage structures and increase in the direction of potential opportunities by eliminating the weaknesses.

In this article the analysis of gaps in processing of raw laser scanning data and results of bridging the gaps discovered on the base of usage of laser scanning data for historic building information modeling is presented. The results of the development of a unified hybrid technology for the processing, storage, access and visualization of combined laser scanning and photography data about historical buildings are analyzed. The first result of the technology application for the historical building of St. Petersburg Polytechnic University shows reliability of the proposed approaches.

In Russia, Building Information Modeling (BIM) is becoming a mandatory requirement for the construction of new buildings. There is a positive experience in the implementation and examination of projects with BIM. A number of Russian companies have already introduced and are actively using information design technologies in their activities. However, at the current moment, the use of BIM in Russia is at the start. This paper shows examples of the use of BIM and laser scanning in the development of scientific and project documentation for cultural heritage sites. The paper shows the stages of engineering research. A comparison is made between traditional methods of building inspection and with the method of laser scanning. The key advantages of using a BIM model at the design stage, restoration and subsequent stages of the object’s life cycle are shown. The promising areas of application of BIM technologies, laser scanning technologies at different stages of the life cycle of an object (buildings, structures, utilities) have been identified.
