Most of the small bowel obstruction cases are due to adhesions and hernias. Identifying strangulated cases may save patients from consequences of unnecessary operations and save patients who need urgent intervention by early detection. Serum markers of intestinal ischemia may help to identify and detect strangulation. The aim of this study was to identify if certain blood values such as RDW can accurately predict presence of strangulation preoperatively. We reviewed files of 127 patients who were operated because of incarcerated abdominal hernias for serum biomarkers and evaluated them with the operative findings. Our results show that elevation in red cell distribution width and white blood cell count may reflect strangulation. These findings may be useful in identifying the strangulated cases that need urgent surgical intervention.

Being, according to the latest views, one of the manifestations of the general ptotic constitution, prolapse of the uterus, which, according to Halban and Tandler, is also a kind of hernia, of course, can occur in combination with other abdominal hernias. In 285 patients I operated on for prolapse of the uterus, I met a similar combination in 12 cases, and in 4 of them there were umbilical hernias, in 1 - a hernia of a straight line of the abdomen and in 7 - inguinal hernias, among which 3 required plastic surgery.

Abstract Aim “Spigelian hernia is uncommon and accounts for only 0.12–2% of all abdominal hernias. It is mandatory to perform surgical correction and in recent years the laparoscopic approach is gaining ground. The authors pretend to demonstrate a video of an outpatient laparoscopic repair of Spigelian hernia.” Material and Methods “53-year-old woman with a left Spigelian hernia referred to laparoscopic repair via intraperitoneal approach.” Results “The patient was submitted to laparoscopic correction with a Ventralex® mesh. The surgery went without any complication and under 30 minutes. A few hours after the surgery, the patient was discharged. In the follow-up appointment, the patient had no complaints or evidence of recurrence.” Conclusions “Spigelian hernias are rare and have a mandatory surgical indication. Traditionally, open surgical repair is most commonly used. However, laparoscopic approach is becoming increasingly popular since it allows faster recovery, shorter hospital stay, and less pain, with no commitment to recurrence. Currently, there are no studies that demonstrate the superiority of a laparoscopic technique (intraperitoneal, TAPP or TEP). The intraperitoneal route is a simple, faster, and easily reproducible approach.”

AbstractHernias are a relatively common occurrence in the armed forces community and may affect an individual’s fitness for duty and impact on operational capability, particularly in specialist occupations. Their early identification and management will allow appropriate treatment and minimise any impact on operational capability. This article aims to summarise the assessment and management of simple hernias and considers occupational considerations in their management for personnel serving in the Royal Navy and Royal Marines.

Despite the accumulated practical experience and an exhaustive description of hernias of the mesentery of the transverse colon in the latest literature (Menego and Bardesco), there is still a lot of unclear pathogenesis of this disease. Internal hernias of the abdominal cavity in the vast majority of cases are just an accidental finding during surgery. A patient with an internal hernia of the abdominal cavity who has met in our practice undoubtedly deserves to be reminded of this type of "acute abdomen".
