<p><b>This thesis represents an appreciative enquiry to identify features of effective verbal communication between nurses and patients.</b></p> <p>Using a method developed by the Language in the Workplace Project (Stubbe 1998) two nurse participants recorded a small sample of their conversations with patients as they occurred naturally in clinical practice. These six conversations constitute the main body of raw data for the study. The data was analysed using a combination of discourse and ethnographic analysis.</p> <p>Experience in nursing, particularly insider knowledge of the context of district nursing, helped me to uncover the richness of meaning in the conversations. The subtle interconnections and nuances could easily have been missed by an outside observer.</p> <p>The study has shown that in their interactions with patients, expert nurses follow a pattern in terms of the structure and content of the conversations and it is possible to identify specific features of effective nurse-patient communication within these conversations. The most significant of these are the repertoire of linguistic skills available to nurses, the importance of small talk and the attention paid by nurses to building a working relationship with patients, in part, through conversation.</p> <p>The findings have implications for nursing education and professional development.</p>

AbstractThe current nursing profession is challenged with a decreasing supply of competent clinical teachers due to several factors consequently impacting the quality of nursing education. To meet this demand, academic nursing programs are resorting to hiring expert nurses who may have little or no teaching experience. They need support during their transition from practice to teaching. Using the systematic approach of a Rapid Evidence Assessment (REA), scholarly literature was reviewed to identify existing professional development needs for novice clinical teachers as well as supportive strategies to aid the transition of experienced nurses into teaching practice. The REA included 29 relevant studies. Findings revealed three main professional development needs for novice clinical teachers and key supportive strategies. Based on these findings recommendations for best practices to support and prepare novice clinical teachers are presented.

Ken Wilber's integral metatheory is an interpretive framework that can that be applied to the clinical practice of medicine and medical and nursing education. It offers a comprehensive view of the patient illness experience superior to current models of patient care and may provide a valuable guide for nursing and medical practice and teaching. This article seeks to explain some of the basic concepts of integral metatheory and show their potential application to practice and teaching using the current COVID-19 pandemic as an illustrative model.

Purpose: Nursing development is considered as one of the most important ways to achieve the universal health coverage and sustainable development goals in different countries. Nursing in Iran has the potential to provide services at all levels of universal health coverage. Therefore, planning for nursing in Iran needs to recognize the future challenges. This study aims to explore the future challenges of nursing in the health system of Iran from the perspective of nursing experts.Methods: In this qualitative study, 11 semi-structured interviews were conducted with nursing experts by purposive sampling in 2017–2018. Interviews were recorded and transcribed and framework analysis method was used to analysis the data.Results: The results showed that a favorable future requires planning in three areas of nursing “governance challenges” including centralized nursing stewardship, policy-making and legislation, monitoring and evaluation, and cooperation and communication with other institutions, “inadequacy of professional development with social demands” including community-based nursing, nursing upgrades with disease patterns, expanding home care, expanding care centers, and use of technology, “human resource challenges “including nursing education tailored to the needs of the community, empowering nursing managers, recruiting and retaining nurses, and specialized nursing.Conclusions: A favorable future requires a coherent nursing government, professional development of nursing based on social demands, and enhancing human resources in line with the emerging needs of the future.

Nursing education is driven by emerging challenges of scientific, technological, and professional advances that require the use of strategies that promote students' development of critical thinking for decision making in different contexts. It also requires that teachers constantly reflect on their pedagogical practices and (re)think them using strategies that allow their enhancement. The use of multimodal narratives (MNs) can be an important tool for teachers' professional development, namely to improve their classroom practices. Given the novelty of the use of MNs in nursing education, this chapter presents an analysis concerning the experience of making a MN and how it has been reflected in the authors' pedagogical practices. With this experience, potentialities of continuing to use MNs in nurse education are explored.
