<p>In the early 21st century environmental, social and cultural changes are confronting the traditional relationship one has with technology, space and subsequently architecture. More specifically the tools of design are becoming integrated, whereby the clarity of tradition is becoming overlapped, becoming blurred. With this in mind the research investigates the opportunities of an iterative hand drawing process to develop architectural responses to movement, time and transformation. Highlighting a future which is inevitably changing, it is important to assess the inherent qualities of our design tools, as they too influence the connection and formation of architectural space. The research explores hand drawing through a design process which firstly, challenges drawn representation techniques and secondly, emphasises movement and transformation as key architectural drivers within the 21st century. Due to the continual developments within technology, construction practices and design materials, there is an opportunity to question and reflect our changing built environment and hence, the role of movement in architecture. With reference to the theorists Catherine Ingraham and Robin Evans, the research develops the position that the practice of architecture has become restricted by linear ordering systems. This is reflective in the orthographic representation of architecture alongside the built edges and boundaries of architectural spaces. Therefore, today's transforming conditions are used to validate and further articulate Ingraham's and Evans's theories, outlining a design response, using Wellington as a case study, built upon overlaying environmental, social and cultural relationships. The architectural outcome connects rather than dissociates itself to transforming conditions, creating multiple rather than singular boundary conditions through architectural blurring. Traditional relationships to spatial boundaries and edges are critiqued through the ambiguities and layers of working within an iterative hand drawing process. The influence of hand drawn qualities has provided a way to insert motion into a construct which is perceptually static, hence introducing a means to negotiate and work within a period of transition.</p>

By the late 20th and early 21st century, credit institutions in Bolivia had become more complex, resilient and popular that at any time previously in its history. Traditional economics analyses emphasize incentives created by laws such as those promulgated by the Kemmerer mission in Bolivia in the 1920s and 30s, or material factors, such as transportation costs. Yet neither of these explanations offers a compelling explanation for the magnitude of the flourishing of popular and complex credit institutions in Bolivia after the 1960s. Cultural changes, however, might offer a compelling complement to legal and material explanations of credit development. Vatican II represented an important mass change in Bolivian culture, and institutions associated with these reforms ushered in a new era of credit institution development in the country.A finales del siglo XX y comienzos del XXI, las instituciones crediticias en Bolivia se volvieron más complejas, elásticas y populares que en cualquier otro momento de su historia. Los análisis económicos tradicionales ponen de relieve los incentivos creados por leyes como las promulgadas por la misión Kemmerer en Bolivia en las décadas de 1920 y 1930, o factores materiales, tales como los costos de transporte. Con todo, ninguna de estas explicaciones ofrece una explicación convincente de la importancia del florecimiento de instituciones crediticias populares y complejas en Bolivia después de la década de 1960.  No obstante, los cambios culturales podrían ofrecer un complemento de peso a las explicaciones legales y materiales del desarrollo del crédito. El Concilio Vaticano II representa un importante cambio en la cultura boliviana, y las instituciones asociadas con sus reformas marcan el comienzo de una nueva era en el desarrollo de la institución crediticia en el país.

On January 26, 1983, the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) announced that it would require all railroads under its regulatory jurisdiction to change from Retirement-Replacement-Betterment (RRB) accounting, to a more theoretically sound depreciation accounting for matching revenues and expenses. The change was needed because RRB did not allow for the recapture of track investment, leaving the railroads with limited capital to replace aging track lines. Over the previous three decades, it had become painfully obvious to everyone that the industry's economic woes were the result of archaic accounting procedures that lacked harmony with the rest of American accounting standards, but the ICC was reluctant to change until new tax legislation in the early 1980s forced the issue. The decision was a culmination of a debate that started in the mid-1950s when Arthur Andersen, with the help of the securities industry, began an effort to harmonize railroad and industry standards using arguments that mirror those supporting the international accounting harmonization efforts of the early 21st century.

AbstractThis article discusses the diachronic development of the Spanish multifunctional formula en plan (with its variant en plan de, literally ‘in plan (of)’ but usually equivalent to English like). The article has two main aims: firstly, to describe the changes that the formula has undergone since its earliest occurrences as a marker in the nineteenth century up to the early 21st century. The diachronic study evinces a process of grammaticalization in three steps: from noun to clause adverbial and then to discourse marker. Secondly, to conduct a contrastive analysis between en plan (de) and the English markers like and kind of/kinda so as to shed new light on the potential existence of a universal pathway of grammaticalization in the emergence of discourse markers.
