In the offshore oil industry, Multipurpose Support Vessels with extensive diving capability are used for inspection, maintenance and repair of subsea pipelines. The diving industry has developed systemic safety checks and strict regulatory control after a number of fatal accidents in early years. However, accidents do continue to occur and, when involving divers in the water, are often fatal. Hydrogen sulphide (H2S), called ‘sour gas’ in an oil field, is produced by the action of anaerobic bacteria on sulphate containing organic matter. A highly toxic gas, it remains a constant danger for offshore oil industry workers who must remain vigilant. Crude oil and gas produced in these oilfields is called ‘sour crude’ and pipelines carry this crude with varying content of dissolved H2S to shore for processing. Divers are routinely called to attend to leaking pipelines and come in contact with this crude. Their hot water suits and umbilical lines are often covered with crude containing dissolved H2S. There is always a possibility that these may enter and contaminate the bell environment. Such a case leading to fatality is reported here.

TheMacondo oil rig explosion and subsequent oil spill was the worst disaster in the US offshore oil industry since 1969. Although some worried that it reflected the greater challenges of deepwater drilling for which the industry was not prepared, investigations have shown that a variety of decisions made, primarily during the drilling of the well, caused the blowout and explosion. Apparently, a corporate culture of cost cutting led to many of these decisions, and it suggests that human failures, both in senior levels where culture is set, and at the lower levels where it affects operations, are the primary challenges that need to be overcome to reduce the likelihood of future disaster.


Significance Rising output from the Gulf of Mexico, which accounts for about 16% of total US production, will help offset some of the falling output from onshore shale projects, although overall production is still declining following the collapse in prices. Impacts The downturn in new offshore oil and gas activity will hit the state budgets of Alabama, Louisiana and Texas. Offshore drilling services specialists will see revenues fall, as companies cut back drilling and push for reduced rates. In the event of a sustained price recovery, US production will primarily be driven by renewed shale drilling, not offshore.

The province ofNewfoundland and the federal government both claim ownership of the oil and gas resources off the coast of Newfoundland. This paper examines the legal arguments that could be raised in the event that the issue is litigated. Matters examined include the applicability of the continental shelf doctrine, whether New foundland could successfully assert more limited claim to the area within three miles of its shoreline, and the possible legislative competence of each government in relation to the offshore oil industry.

As onshore oil and gas deposits are becoming more difficult to locate, and as the world demands for energy continue to increase at an alarming rate, oil companies are channeling much of their exploration activities towards offshore operations, and in particular, towards operations centered off Canada's coast lines. Because of the environment, offshore drilling presents problems which are novel to the onshore-geared oil industry. J. M. Killey discusses in detail many of the considerations involved in drafting the offshore drilling contract, concentrating on problems such as the liability of the various parties; costs; scheduling; pollution; conflict of laws; etc. Similarly, he discusses service contracts (such as supply boat charters; towing services; helicopter services; etc.^ which are necessity to the operation of an offshore drilling rig. To complement his paper, the author has included number of appendices which list the various considerations lawyer must keep in mind when drafting contracts for offshore operations.

Nowadays energy has an important role as a driving sector of economy. Forecasting 150 billion dollars investment in energy sector during the fifth development program in Iran, the banking and financial system require a dynamic and modern economy and financial instruments. Obviously, this approach needs to remove legal barriers and modification of contracts. Financing in the oil industry has faced with serious challenges in recent years. In addition, investing in common offshore oil and gas resources is indispensable. Accordingly we are going to design a new contract which is called Oil SPFO (Standard Parallel Forward security with two Options under betting condition), in order to raise funds needed. In this article we would investigate the SPFO for Iran Ministry of Petroleum (MOP)’s finance and present a model for pricing the oil SPFO based on Black and Scholes option pricing model. Finally, we have some recommendations to develop the oil SPFO and suggest that other researchers work on pricing the oil parallel forward securities according to this model.

More than a decade ago, oil drillers and naval architects started to use vessels instead of fixed structures for offshore drilling. A multitude of novel platform concepts were developed which allowed the tremendous spreading of offshore oil activities. Today, search for oil spreads into areas of greater depth and farther away from the shores. This requires new developments of technology over a broad spectrum. The latest concepts of underwater oil production systems are briefly described.
