The aim of this study, based on pupils’ drawings, is to find out what kind of collective emotional atmosphere dominates in fifth-graders’ mathematics lessons. Pupils’ (N = 136) drawings were analyzed using a holistic evaluation of emotional atmosphere during mathematics lesson. Even though the collective emotional atmosphere in mathematics lesson is positive in the total data, there are large differences among the different classrooms. In most of the classrooms the emotional atmosphere could be described more or less as ambivalent (there are both positive and negative facial or other expressions). In two classrooms the emotional atmosphere could be described as positive and only in one as neutral. The differences between the classrooms are thus large. Based on our data, it can be said that asking pupils to do drawings is a good and many-sided method to collect data about the collective emotional atmosphere of a teaching group.

The beginning of the school year is an exciting time for everyone. Teachers and students are filled with enthusiasm about what the new year holds. Unfortunately, when I begin the first mathematics lesson of the year with my fifth graders, this enthusiasm is often replaced by myriad student anxieties. By the time that students reach fifth grade, they carry with them any number of negative feelings about school in general and mathematics in particular. How can I share with my students the beauty of mathematics if they have the mindset that mathematics is nothing more than numbers?

Two groups each containing 24 deaf subjects were compared with 24 fifth graders and 24 twelfth graders with normal hearing on the learning of segments of written English. Eight subjects from each group learned phrasally defined segments such as “paid the tall lady,” eight more learned the same words in nonphrases having acceptable English word order such as “lady paid the tall,” and the remaining eight in each group learned the same words scrambled, “lady tall the paid.” The task consisted of 12 study-test trials. Analyses of the mean number of words recalled correctly and the probability of recalling the whole phrase correctly, given that one word of it was recalled, indicated that both ages of hearing subjects showed facilitation on the phrasally defined segments, interference on the scrambled segments. The deaf groups showed no differential recall as a function of phrasal structure. It was concluded that the deaf do not possess the same perceptual or memory processes with regard to English as do the hearing subjects.

ABSTRACTThe fifth grade inner city volunteer teaching project (5GVP) at Marquette University's College of Engineering has attempted to inform and inspire Milwaukee's inner city fifth graders about engineering for the last ten years. Each year I have recruited our engineering students to volunteer to take self contained science lessons into the Milwaukee Public Schools'fifth grade classrooms. Although the lessons are on science and the career touted is engineering in general, the lessons are flavored by my being in MSE. Being excited about a career is certainly a precursor to choosing that career. I have found the fifth graders very excited about seeing and experiencing science in action as the engineering students present it to them. Hopefully, the program at Marquette will result in more inner city students choosing to enter college as engineers, with MSE garnering its usual share.

Higher education in Indonesia is regulated by the government with the Higher Education Accreditation (APT). In APT 3.0, Higher Education is required to be able to present performance data in the form of a Higher Education Performance Report (LKPT) as a reference in making a Self-Evaluation Report (LED). However, it is necessary to have an in-depth analysis to determine the gaps in the data required by Higher Education according to the APT 3.0 standard. The process of integrating the samples refer to the Zachman Framework (ZF). The results of this simplification that the data is available in support of APT 3.0 approximately 79% of the total data both inside and outside the core business of Higher Education and is well managed in an integrated database. The remaining 21% of the data that are not available is spread across several information systems, especially SIMMawa, SIMHumas and Cooperation, and SIMAKU. This shows that the change in accreditation standards that have been in effect since April 2019 has created a significant data gap for Higher Education. This research also produced an alternative model of integrated data management that can be used as input for Information System developers in the Higher Education scope.
