Phospholipids bilayers fulfill an important role in natural joint lamellar-repulsive lubrication mechanism. Low friction between surfaces coated with negatively charged the phospholipid headgroup (–PO4-) as being due to a hydration layer. Wettability of the cartilage surface depends on the number of PLs that act as a lubricant. The cartilage can be classified as a group of intelligent material, which in the wet state has a contact angle of ~0º, and the air-dry state has a contact angle of ~104º.

Seven healthy mature rabbits were used to study both the surface morphology of the meniscus using both transmission electronmicroscopy (TEM) and scanning electronmicroscopy (SEM) and articular cartilage of the femoral condyle using SEM. Results showed that the membrane covering the meniscus was structurally the extension of synovial membrane of the knee joint capsule. Additionally, the presence of canal-like openings over the membranous surface to the meniscus was noted, which were absent over the articular cartilage surface. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a disabling disease, commonly thought of as the “wear and tear” of articular cartilage, afflicting 27 million Americans [1]. Multiple (e.g. biomechanical and biochemical) factors [2] contribute to maintenance of healthy joints through chondrocyte and extracellular matrix interactions. Interestingly, volumetric contractions of nuclei exhibit a zonal dependence [3], suggesting that nuclear mechanics may play a key role in the maintenance of healthy tissue by mechanically-mediated pathways.
