Tartaric acid–zinc nitrate has been found to be an efficient Brønsted acid-assisted Lewis acid catalytic system for the facile synthesis of β-amino carbonyl compounds through the one-pot Mannich reaction of aldehydes, aromatic amines and ketones in ethanol at room temperature. Remarkable enhancement of reactivity by tartaric acid (Brønsted acid) was observed in these reactions in the presence of anhydrous zinc nitrate (Lewis acid), due to coordination of the tartaric acid ligand to zinc ions increasing the acidity of the system. This procedure shows some advantages such as mild reaction conditions, short reaction times and high yields.

In the presence of a Brønsted acid catalyst, both aldehydes and N-Boc-aminals were converted to enecarbamates and N-Boc-iminium salts as activated nucleophiles and electrophiles, respectively, giving unprecedented Mannich adducts.

A cost-effective and efficient solid Brønsted acid catalyst was synthesized by loading methanesulfonic acid (MSA) on silica and was used for the acid-catalyzed Pechmann reaction to test the catalytic activity and its reusability. Derivatives of 4-methylcoumarin were synthesized in good yields within short reaction times in the presence of environmentally friendly higher n-alkanes as solvents. The regeneration study of the spent catalyst showed satisfactory results.
