The paper shows the expediency and effectiveness of using the chemometric methods in solving the problems offorensic identification at the level of establishing the common group affiliation. The paper gives illustrations of using the principal components method and cluster analysis in a comparative study of 19 samples of gas condensate according to gas-liquid chromatography data. The method of principal components is more obvious in its visual estimation as well as in grouping the objects having similar indicators of their component composition. The cluster analysis allowed to distribute the examined objects into groups from the beginning. This was confi rmed during their subsequent pairwise comparison by using the method of "fingerprints".

- Abstract The paper consists of two parts. The first is more general: it introduces to university ranking, shows the leading international ranking, discusses the uses people make of rankings. The second focuses on Italian ranking Censis-la Repubblica developing two different kinds of analyses: after considering indicators validity and reliability, principal components analysis and cluster analysis are applied to a partial replication of Censis-la Repubblica data. A list of points to pay attention comes out of these analyses: it can be useful when defining rankings of complex institutions such as universities.Key words: ranking, university ranking, Censis-la Repubblica, validity and reliability, normalisation and combination of indicators.

The paper presents an estimation of life standard diversity for residents of Polish voivodships in 2003–2013. The principal component analysis was applied for multidimensional functional data and the dendrite method was used for cluster analysis. These methods made it possible to isolate relatively homogeneous groups of voivodships that had similar values of characteristics under consideration, for the whole period at issue.
